| Post subject: | Multi-function switch malfunction again. |
About a year ago the stealer diagnosed my KJ with a bad multi-function switch, because when driving at night with my lights and turn signal on and occasionally when the signal kicked off my headlights would flash off momentarily. They said it was a short in the switch. Well to make this story short it is doing it again. My question is this, Since they replaced that at approx 30,000 mi under the 3-36 and I am over 45,000 now, should it be a free repair since it is doing it again? |

Well I know most OEM parts installed by stealerships(must be bought and installed at that dealer) have a 12 month or 12,000 mile warrenty,They might or might not let it slide. |

What he said. Since it is an ongoing issue with the same part, they might. |

I know the feeling with the multi-function switch, mny KJ is on it's 3rd...and it only has 12K miles....Good luck with the dealer in allowing you to go ahead with another replacement at little to no cost since they have already done it...work all the angles.... |

Hey guys, what does this switch cost installed/not installed? Does anyone know what exactly is shorted in it? I am a fairly excellent solderer if I can get at the problem. Haha |

All that they could figure out was that it was something in the switch, but they couldn't figure out what part of it was exactly shorted. I guess that is why they are paid the big bucks. |

I paid under $50 including shipping for a new multifunction switch back in September from moparpart.com. Most other places I found online wanted 80 bucks or so. But when I look at moparparts now, it looks like they've changed their website setup. You have to request a quote by email for most parts. Boring story, I'm sure. But someone asked how much they cost. Somewhere between 50 and 80 bucks. I wouldn't pay anyone to install it. It's a piece of cake. |

Cool sounds good, thanks a lot. How did you get it off? Does the whole stalk come off or just the end? I havent even looked at how to do this yet so if its painfully easy just tell me to shut up and look at it myself! |

Jdumont They never let you have the old part. leepskate Do you know how where a write up is to take it apart? If that is the case then Imight do it myself. Also is the procedure the same as in the 02-04? If that is the case I might buy the repair manual for the earlier jeeps. |

I have an '02, so I don't know if this has changed for other model years. But for an 02 you just have to disconnect the negative battery cable, remove 2 torx screws on the bottom of the plastic shroud around the steering column, remove the shroud, unplug the old switch, plug in the new and then put the shroud back on and hook up the battery. I'm going from memory, but that's basically it. I don't have access to the repair manual right now but I can double check it later. BTW, the headlight control stalk and the wiper stalk are both built into the multifunction switch. When you replace the switch you're replacing everything. |

Very easy. 20 mins tops. If you're looking for the part online, Google seems to turn up more hits if you type multi function as two words. |
