 Post subject: What does the factory tow package consist of?

I'm thinking about buying a 19 foot jayco jayfeather, it weighs 3,500 pounds. I know it's in my towing limits, but I don't have the tow package and was wondering what it consist of. I might be able to do some upgrades for towing myself if it's just a bigger tranny cooler or something like that, "thanks".

Some years it came w/ aux tranny cooler but I think that is now standard w/o tow package. So basically, aside from Htich and wiring you also get an extra mechanical engine fan and a power steering cooler.

This is from the Jeep website for an '07:

Send them an e-mail with your VIN and ask for a "build sheet". It will tell you everything the factory put on it.

The camper place said that my tow rating also depended on my gear ratio. Well, I looked on my window sticker from when it was new and it doesn't say what gear ratio it has. It says 4x4, 3.7 v6 and 4 speed automatic, but nothing about my gear ratio. The way I thought it works was the auto's had 3:73 and the manuals had 3:54. I just built an 07 to see what the tow package consisted of on the jeep site. They listed the 3:54 has the standard gear and 3:73 being the optional choice. Mine is an 06 sprot 65th aniversary edition, what gear ratio should I have? It didn't even list the tow package on the option list, just moon roof, fog lights, skid plate group, stuff like that.

Manual or auto? If auto you should have 3.73's but to make sure look at your rear diff cover,there should be a metal tag that has your ratio stamped on it(under one of the diff cover bolts).

It's an automatic, thanks for the info , I'll check the tag on the rear diff. I sure hope it's 3:73, if it's a 3:54, might as well just upgrade to 4:10. I supose I could still tow with 3:54, but I don't feel good about it, I'ld rather 3:73 and if I don't, I'll just swap in 4:10's and be done with it.

If you want to know your rear end ratio just put the truck in neutral, jack up the back end and then rotate the tire 1 full revolution. You can count the number of times the D/S rotoates and then do the math.. To make it a little more accuate you can just rotate the tire 10 times because it's sometimes hard to tell the difference between a .5 rotation and a .73 rotation.


The only real thing your are missing from the tow package is the PS cooler. And if you ordered the off road group, there is a pretty good chance that you got it with that group. The H/D cooling is just the mechanical fan in addition to the electric fan.

Other thing to think about is a trailer bake controller

I thinkj all 65th anniv editions have 3.73. If you go to Jeep site and build and price you can change it to 2006. There is a pull down menu on top left of the window that lets you price an 06. Put in your options and see which gear ratios are possible. Best way is build sheet though. I have a 65th and my build sheet shows 3.73s.

Thanks guys, I have 3:73's. As far as the brake controler, the camper shop is going to install all that. Power steering cooler, I never heard of that. I'm not going to worry to much then, cause I've never had a power steering cooler on anything else I've ever towed with, raced or wheeled for that matter. It's a nice touch, but not a have to have item I wouldn't think. I have a tranny cooler, might upgrade to an oil cooler as well if there's that will work on the kj.

For the PS fluid - as long as you kept newer fluid in the pump there probably wouldn't be any need for the cooler as it just aids in low speed cooling while you back a trailer up (and turn the wheel constantly) or while you're off roading on some rocks or similar. But like you said, not having the cooler probably won't cause any harm.

I just read over at JU that some tow packages had a mechanical fan as well as the e-fan, or instead of the e-fan, wasn't sure what the poster was saying. Do any of you guy's have a mechanical fan with your tow package, or have you heard anything about this issue? All I have is an e-fan, but if needed I could get a mechanical fan installed I supose.

If you wanted to convert to the mechanical fan you would need

The waterpump pulley
The fan
The larger shroud

There really isn't a need for the secondary fan. In a seperate thread we determined that this fan is just a fail safe / secondary cooling fan that helps to pull some air through the radiator. The electric fan is still fully capable of cooling your Jeep - it just might run a little harder when you are trailering the pop-up.

All of this makes changing the belt a real chore!

Thanks for the pics, I'm thinking staying with the e-fan and installing an oil cooler and see how that works out. I'll start out doing some local camp grounds this summer and see how she acts. The furthest I would be pulling it at this point would be to W,Va. Were flat here, where as W,Va would be in the mountains. I think the e-fan and oil cooler should do the trick, but I'll play around with this summer on some hot days and see what the temp does. Just about anywhere you go is a good amount of highway driving at speed. Thanks for all your help.
