After more than five years my OEM rim’s clear coat is peeling  I’m not ready to spend $$ on five new ones. What I want to do for the mean time is scrap, peal, sandblast, ect.. All the clear coat finish and paint the wheel with some black over the counter spray paint as well as apply some clear coats. Has anyone done this to their rims?

I havent done it yet but will probably do it when the weather gets warm. I think I want to take a good photo first and photoshop it black to see what it will look like, just in case. Im pretty sure there are people on here that have done it, cant remember which thread it was off the top of my head though. |

just sand them down good, with fine steel wool, clean good with brake parts cleaner and primer. any paint will stick if you clean it well. id show you how i painted my rims but i dont want anyone elses to look like mine. i have had no problems what so ever in getting paint to stick with brake parts cleaner, years later. |

Maximum Carnage,you can sand the rims(scuff really good so no part is shiny) with red scotchbrite(can get at auto parts stores or bodyshop supply store) then clean them really good with dawn dish soap and let dry.Then after they are dry clean them again with wax/grease remover(can get at auto parts stores or bodyshop supply store) or denentured alcohol(DO NOT USE BRAKECLEANER,the paint won't stick properly) and then you can spray with primer or the black paint,use a good brand of spray paint not the 99 cent wallmart special,Krylon or Rustolieum is good.Spray in even thin coats and allow about 10-20 min between coats(if at 75-85 degrees,a little longer if colder) and then let dry at least 24 hours.This is a easy process but tim,e consuming,good luck and post pics if you do it.
id show you how i painted my rims but i dont want anyone elses to look like mine. |

My rims have been peeling some too.. Ive been thinking about sanding them and seeing if I can put a coat of clear back on them.. Im sure it cannot look any worse than it does right now.

Its pretty hard to get clearcoat to look good after a while, with heat from the brakes, road salt, cinders, rocks, it all chips them up bad. With paint at least if it does get chipped you can retouch it. I stopped at Jegs today on the way into columbus and saw that they have regular wheel paint, have dark grey for sure, not sure what else. You could go on there website and see what kind it is and possibly order it locally. Stupid me, I didnt get the name brand of it!

So when you are painting the wheels is everyone removing tires or leaving the tries on the rims?? |

The best way (most durable way) would be to have the tire dismounted, then have the rims lightly blasted with fine enough pellet that would remove the clearcoat, but not put any dimples in the soft aluminum rim.. Then have the whole thing powder coated in the color of your choice. I think Silver looks the best, but Black or dark grey would be killer too.... (just not on my Jeep because it's silver and black rims would be goofy) I think just regular old paint would flake off with all of the heat on the front rims. |
