I was looking at my engine, trying to figure out where this white powder was comming from and I saw this slit on the alterantor fly wheel where the fan belt is on. Is this normal? It is a very purposefully looking slit cut. It does not look like a crack, all edges are square looking. I have a pic below taken with my cell phone, so it is not that great of a pic. And the white powder was road salt that did not get fully washed off.

Ive seen that on ours Jeeps before, its ok. I took the PS pump to advance to get the pully pressed off and back onto a new pump and the guy said it wasnt normal although it had been like that since we got the Jeep back in 1994. He just gave us a new pully that didnt have the crack in it, so I didnt say anything. :)

Possibly to allow for heat expansion or as someone said, the way it's machined?

Both my KJs have that too. I'm not concerned.

Thanks for the feed back. Sorry I took so long in responding, have been out of town for a while, and no computer.
