I remember a few threads on this, but I'll restate my opinion...
Before you hit a trail have all four skid plates and front and rear recovery points (and a tow strap). This is non-negotiable as far as I'm concerned.
Beyond that, it depends how you want to wheel.
1. F&R recovery points
2. skid plates (x4, factory are ok, others are better)
3. hookless tow strap (15K-20K is my preference)
4. CB radio (hand held; small with a mag antenna; full bore CB with weather and a 4' firestick II; as long as it works on the trail)
5. rocker protection (boulderbars, skink sliders, CRS rock rails)
6. lift (spacer lift if you have little $ (daystar, revtek); suspension lift if you can (rusty's 2.5 or frankenlift)
7. tires (now that you're lifted, run some 31" tires, or what ever will fit your lift. 245/75r16 are popular, but I don't want to start a flame war here)
8. highlift jack (factory jack wont help you if your lifted, unless you carry some 2x6's)
we'll, that's a start. by the time you get those on your KJ, you should have a good feel for what you want to do next (LSD, lockers, etc.)
