Is there a formal protocol/instructions that dealers and service shops should use to change the fluids for the KJ: front and rear diffs; tranny? I have the service manual but it doesn't really go into detail on fluids and servicing. I am going to take it to a dealership since I don't have the skill set nor equipment to do the differential fluids but given my past experiences, the monkeys may assign a newbie to do the fluid change and I don't have the confidence to just have them wing it. When I last asked to have the tranny fluid changed at one dealership, they insisted that a half service would be sufficient $250 as it is too difficult to do a complete tranny service on a KJ?? WTF? So naturally I am nervous even to take to another dealership without proper instructions. |

the diff change is very easy. You don't need any special tools for it. IF at any cost you can avoid the dealship..do. all you kneed is sockets and a screwdriver, if that. I have the HAYNES service manual. They do an OK job at describing the tranny fluid change. It would be great for someone to post up in the tech session for this. But it is still pretty simple, even if you have little knowledge on this stuff. And it saves you A LOT of $$$. Try grabbing a friend or a LOST member in your area to help you along. Again these fluid changes are simple and cheap. Shops charge the poop outta you for this. And if you do it once...you can do it again. |

Changing the gear lube is simple. Remove the ten differential cover bolts, pry the cover off with a screwdriver, allow the old lube to drain into a bucket, scrape the old RTV from the cover and differential housing, pull the fill plug from the cover, apply new RTV to the cover, reinstall the cover and bolts, fill the differential to the bottom of the fill hole, and reinstall the plug. Use a scraper or razor to remove the old RTV and run the new RTV bead around both sides of the bolt holes. Be sure to add LSD additive if you have a limited slip.
