Adjusting the E-Brake

Ive been seeing alot of posts about the E-brake taking to many clicks to hold the Jeep in place. Ive personally tried adjusting the E-brake pads, and while it helped some, it didnt do much at all. I believe you should still adjust the pads to make sure they are both applying the same amount of torque to each side, but this method works ALOT better.

Anyway, mine has been getting worse and since I live on a hill, I always use the parking brake. I could visually look down into the console and tell that there was slack in the cable because I could move the handle a good inch before the cable would move. I also asked my father to get under the Jeep and look at the rear brake mechanism to confirm the slack in the cable.

The first thing you need to do is to remove the lid for the center console, there are 3 screws that hold it on. Next, take the two screws out of the bottom of the container and two on the top toward the front of the box. Pull that out and you will be able to see the cable and the mechanism that SHOULD automatically adjust itself. Ive seen alot of posts saying the Liberty e-brake does not adjust itself, well, it should. I tinkered with the thing until I figured out how it works. Pull the ebrake up a few clicks, then grab the little tab(see pic below) while letting the brake handle back down. Be sure NOT to take to much slack out which would cause the rear pads to drag. Do this a couple times(If needed) until most of the slack is out of the cable. Its also best to jack up the rear end and check the pads to make sure there isnt any drag. If there is drag, Im not sure how to let the slack back out. The best way would be to adjust the pads at each wheel.

The tab is circled:

When you pull the ebrake up, that entire thing will move with it. When you hold the tab and let the handle back down, it will stay in place.

Max time: 15min

worked like a charm had a bit of trouble getting the top of the storage box back on but it holds in D and R and on hills with 3 clicks now.

Youre welcome.

I also had a little trouble getting the screws to line up for the lid. I put a screw in sideways then pulled it back up straight to line them back up..

My e-brake is placed crooked, it is a bit to the left, so everytime I pull it, it squeezes the plastic cover that keeps the dust away, that plastic has been getting thinner and thinner. Is there anyway the e-brake could be adjusted to the right, or the whole thing has to move?

Its a possibility that you could loosen those bolts you see in the pic and move the entire assembly over some. Fairly sure there isnt an adjustment that moves just the lever.

From your pix, I don't see any adjustable place, even the last one. I think I might try bending the lever, but I will just leave it like that for now.

It may be that the console is not in the right position, not the E-brake, I can't tell from the pictures but if it is bolted separately they may have missed when they put down the console.

You might be right, if there is anyway to adjust the console I might give it a shot. But the damage is done already.

AWESOME! Exactly what I was looking for. Great write up. I love this site...I have found so much useful and/or fun stuff to do. Shame dealerships arent this helpful. But what if they were???

this is a fantastic write up on adjusting the E-Break. I was actually thinking about how to do mine because I pull it all the way up and it does not hold the KJ in place. So I decided to logon to L.O.S.T to start a post/research for adjusting the E-Break.

I can not say enough good about this place, there is always something here to help, and many many people here to help every one though any issues or problems.

I hope the L.O.S.T KJ site
keeps growing with more members and continue getting stronger.

well i remember reading this post a while ago.. thinking.. wow that was really awesome.. too bad i cant use it. WELL last night i was at my friends house who just bought a new 2007 GMC truck.. and i pulled the liberty up to it.. set the parking brake.. and left it in neutral (6speed).. and got out.. it then started coasting forward.. and i jumped back in and shut it off.. hahahah and no i can def. use this post.. hahah thanks a ton! it's going to save me.. and possibly a brand new truck agian

I posted this in another thread, but Ive found that you can adjust it without taking that lid off. You can use a screw driver to hold the tab while you let the ebrake back down.

I also had to adjust it again after a trip off-road. I had to pull the ebrake fairly hard so the Jeep didnt roll back into a hill(VERY close to the hill). Im not sure if that adjustment slips alittle when you pull it to hard or what, but it seems to be doing fine now. Time will tell.
