Maybe mine is screwed up. I tried this twice, once 3 days ago, and it doesn't stay tight at all. I followed the directions and everything works like described, except the brake doesn't tighten. :(

Anyone else have issues or provide help? Thanks.

you actually can just use a screwdriver to stick in to hold the tab so you do not have to take the console box out. I just did it and it is very very easy.

Mine doesnt stay tight for a long time. Not sure if its a design flaw or if something is wrong with the ebrake clutch/handle/ whatever you would call that thing that is attached to the cable.

I plan on taking it apart again soon to get a real good look at it and to see just how it 'slips.' Hopefully Ill figure something out. It sure holds the Jeep really good when I first tighten it up, then over the course of a month or so it will loosen right back up.

The WK has a similar setup and it holds like so other. If youre barely rolling and pull the ebrake it will STOP right then.

Weird. Mine never really tightens even though I follow the directions exactly and it appears to be working just as the directions say it is supposed to. I'll try it again for a 3rd time I guess.

I also have the adjustment problem. When I first adjust it, it would hold but as soon as I pull the e-brake lever a few times, it gets loose again. Anybody has any idea how to fix the clutch assembly?

I first read this post in Oct 08 and I tried adjusting from the console. It didn't work for me at all, so then I pulled my tires and drums off and adjusted the star wheel. Well It got a click or two better at the handle but it's still nothing like my wife's Honda. I've convinced myself that it works well enough. I just wish that I didn't have to put my shoulder into it to park my darn Jeep. Oh well, every vehicle has it's quirks.

i have an 02 with rear drum brakes, and my e-brake wouldnt work hardly at all. i tried adjusting it like in this thread, it worked, but quickly went right back to how it was after only a few pulls. So the last month before i finally replaced my rear worn out drum shoes/drums, my e-brake wasnt working AT ALL.

But since i put my new drum shoes/drums on, the e-brake works like a brand new vehicle and hasnt loosened up on me once

That makes sense. My shoes are about half worn and my e-brake works about half as good as it should. I just replaced my front rotors and pads, I guess I might as well replace the rear brakes too.

Well now I know what's wrong with my e-brake.

Tried using the adjustment technique and the tab just kept sliding back into it's original place. How would I go about replacing this part?

This is probably a dumb question but I wanted to know.

Is it true that when you lift a vehicle you have to pull up on the E-brake lever higher to have it engauge?

i always adjust mine to be completely tight in 3 clicks.. so lifting it didnt effect mine much i tried the under the concel thing once and it didnt help.. so i just adjust it at the rear breaks. i have disk and there is a rubber plug at the bottom you pop out and you can crank the star so it tightens it. i just jack up the back and click the p-brake on 3 clicks and tighten the star until i cant possible turn the tires with all my might.. then go a little more (maybe 1 or 2 clicks on the star). always works for me.

Improperly adjusting the parking brakes will make them work real good for a bit then quickly fade due to the parking brake shoes always touching the drum and wearing very fast,it's far worse with the mini-drum setup in the rear disc brake set-up that the KJ uses.By trying to adjust the rear disc brake KJ set-up parking brake you can actually do more damage then any good.

The following is right from the '04 FSM............................................

Quote:
NOTE: The parking brake is self-adjusting, It can
not be adjusted.

Trying to adjust it by the lockout method or the start adjuster will always set it to tight and cause fast wear and the self adjustment can not work right and fails.

If you you have rear drum brakes adjusting the parking brake is easy and safe. You should always pull the rear drums off about every 6 months and clean them up real well and adjust the star adjuster so as to get just a hint of drag against the shoes for best braking and parking brake performance.

I agree with the above post about doing more damage than good. Everytime I have the brakes done in the rear I look at the e-brakes. The things are tiny and barely have anything to hold onto. A little rust on the drum and they are basically useless after a short while. I found a Strauss that gave lifetime on brakes and had the e-brakes done when I did the last set of rears. I've been back so many times for adjustments they actually gave me back my money on the e-brakes! Said the system basically sucks and in order for it to function properly, the drum would have to be resurfaced on the inside where the ebrakes grab and the e-brakes replaced regularly. After 135k miles and severl changes/attempts to tighten myself, I believe them! :?

Mine sux, taken it too a few places, never is right. It is either too lose and it won hold or it gets stuck somewhere in the lines going back as I put the handle down and the truck still has resistance.
