Engine bay hood sound pad removed?

Post subject:  Engine bay hood sound pad removed?
Has anyone removed the pad from their hood. I assume it is there to reduce engine noise. I know there is also a little foam part that helps keep water out of the air intake. But has anyone removed this pad, and left the air intake portion? Notice any difference in noise? I'm looking to save some weight now with the bigger tires to regain some gas mileage.

That pad probably weighs around 2lbs.

Ive tried to remove mine to clean it but I was afraid I would break the plastic tabs that holds it on.

The pad for the intake is there to seal it off when the hood is closed. If I had to guess, it helps stop water from going down into the intake when its raining/fording water. :)

Ive heard that the CRD's have issues with the intake filling up with water when its raining really hard and they are on the HW. I would think they could just drill bigger drain holes in the bottom of the intake box, but Ive not read much about it. :?

You could remove skid plates when not offroad. Alot of people also remove the rear sway bar and say they do not notice a difference. If you remove 3 skids(suspension, tranny, and tcase), along with that rear sway bar, that would be around 50-60lbs or so.

Removing that pad alone won't decrease your vehicle weight enough to improve your gas mileage.

poop :!: I was hoping maybe that would make some difference. Didn't know it weighed so little, knew it wouldn't be very much to begin with.

I know a bunch of guys have a set of off-road treads and on-road ones. Will running 245/75s off-road and 235/70s on road have any effect on alignment when switching back and forth?

Thats what I do.

That will not have any effect on the alignment. I try to record how many miles I have on each set of tires so I will know when to rotate them. :)

That is the pads key purpose,to keep heat from fading your paint.I think everyone that has mileage fears are going to have to look at it like buying other things we really don't need.Pop,cigarettets,beer,dinner out,a movie,and I could go on forever.We need to just suck it up and realize that the fun and attention we get from our KJ is worth the extra we spend on fuel,if not, then it may be time to sell them.I used to sit around and think of ways to get better mileage,but I gave it up.

Ive also heard that, but ya gotta think, on a hot summer day in the middle of a parking lot with the sun shining on the hood, its got to get around 210F which is the temp of the engine. :?

I'm with LiLredLibby...

Gave up worrying about gas mileage. I like the way my Libby looks and drives, so I figure poor gas mileage is the "price you pay to play the game".

I recall Jeepin Al had removed that pad from his KJ. He put a bunch of stickers underneath the hood instead. I don't know if it made his engine sound louder or not though. I think he did it mostly for his ram air hood scoop though.

You can feel how solid and silent the hood closes, CLAMP! I love that sound. If you removed the pad, It may sound like a CLASH.. Not sure, but it would be the last thing I would think of removing to save fuel... How about weight in the cargo area, roof rack rails, spare rack, carpets, etc... there are a lot of things you can remove

You can remove everything inside except the drivers seat. Heck I think a plastic bucket is lighter than the seat by about 40 lbs. I don't know if it will help your fuel mileage but it sure will get off the line quicker. :mrgreen: :-)r

i would strongly recomend not removing that pad, its heat resestent, and a sound barrier, if you do, i would reccomend a box cutter. as far as weight savings, i would aggree with the rest of the people. That pad wont save vary much at all. you could remove the roof rails, that helps. You could also remove the spair tire, rear seats, carpet, and floor pans :D

i think i will got with the plastic bucket. It will evensave on time. Flip it over and I don't have to stop at rest-stops :D I'm just going to deal with the gas mileage. I love the lib with the new tires and now the lift. If i go on longer trips I'll throw on the old pooper tires!

was told that in case of engine fire, the plastic tabs melt on the pad and it then drops onto the motor to help put out the flame.

people that remove their rear bar and cant feel the difference have no business driving on your/our roads.
