Ive used a 2ton come-a-long before to pull my Jeep up a hill I couldnt make it up.. We ended up hooking it up to a truck b/c my dad was getting tired of pulling me up.

what kind are you using out there? What weight capacity is enough to pull the KJ? I don't have a winch, so I am looking for another viable option. |

I don't really consider a come along as a viable choice for recovery unless you are really up against it as they are slow, don't take up much line distance for the work involved, etc. Biggest problem is the actual set up, by the time you get your strap out, attach everything, take out as much slack as you can, you'll find that you'll still use up half your distance just getting eveything tight enough to get any pull at all. Where they work well is in anchoring your rig on off camber or slippery conditions as you make a turn or similar maneuver from a close up anchor point. For emergencies you can get the HiLift hand winch kit and use a chain with link locking hooks on it. Chains have the inherit problem of removing paint and modifying all the metal around them. Another option is a hand winch which gives you a far more pulling options, but they also aren't cheap. The hand winches I've used were all vertical weight rated and had a huge under rating as far as actual load capability to give a big safety factor. Probably around 4 or 5 to one. |

i've got a 4ton harbor freight special. i agree with what spoonplugger had to say about them, but for $30, it's at least something. a 30' tow strap and a CJ are much more effective.... |
