A good piece of safety equipment that Every Jeeper should have but many don't bother with is a fire extinguisher. You may never need it but your buddy might. Just imagine if he had had not had time to get one of his family members out of a car seat. :( It isn't just for saving your Jeep, you might only be needing it to buy yourself or your buddy a couple extra minutes to get out safe.

Man thats an awful sight.. Kinda makes me sick to my stomach..

I really need to get me a fire extinguisher.. I was thinking about that the other day actually.. Guess Ill add that to the list of things I need/want. :lol:

That sucks. At least the driver and passengers are ok though, that's the most important thing. Also when buying a fire extinguisher look at the type it is. There are four types of fire classes, get a fire extinguisher that can handle the 3 main types, A, B and C. These are what you encounter the most.

Great post JJsKJ.......If anyone was ever put in this position,I know they would carry one......so why not get one now so you'll have a good chance to prevent a situation like this?
My boss was in an S-10 fully engulfed with flames from fuel.I was really amazed at what a good chemical exstiguser could do in this situation!Luckily myself and others got it put out before any physical damage was done.Very good advice.

FYI....for those going to Moab for LJS, you have to have a fire extinguisher.....if I rememebr correctly.

Where is the best place to buy the refillable extinguishers, and where do you have them refilled? I would think this would be the best option as you wouldn’t have to worry about throwing away expired bottles.

Guess I'll be making a stop at the local fire extinguisher shop next week. the only reason i know of them is I had a buddy who worked there years ago. thanks for the reminder. good advice.

Halon fire extinguishers are great because they don't leave white powder all over the place, but when it comes down to it, my understanding of the law is that they no longer are allowed to manufacture new extinguishers, but are allowed to refill the old.



Other than that, a ABC extinguisher would be fine. Most people would be happy to have the fire out and worry about the powder later...

Look in the phonebook under fire extinguishers, and the same people can refill them. There are two types of refills, the pressurized ones and the CO2 cylinder type that pressurize after you push down on the handle. Either kind, guys remember that the powder will pack up in the bottle from moving around in the vehicle, jarring, etc. so about once a month we need to take them out a shake them (I bump mine on my steel toed boot a time or two) to free up the powder so you don't just get gas when you really need it. The CO2 cylinder in the bottle type can be serviced by us. You just weigh the cylinder every year, I take it to the post office with me when I take a package and they throw it on the scale for me. If used you just empty the extinguisher if it's not done already, buy a refill kit, put in the powder, spin in the new CO2 cylinder, button everything up with new lead seal, and put it back in the rig.

This page here has more information about the most common types (A, B, and C) of fire extinguishers along with the less common D and K types.

For most fires not involving electricity and chemicals/metals, extinguishers with AB rating should be fine.

I have one in both my jeeps ,club rule. I have them in the same place on both ,on the drivers side at the seat and between the door jam. best to keep them where you can get to. Guy had one mounted on the back roll bar. when we needed it he had to crawl in and unhook it.was not funny when his Tj was on fire.

i just stole a few from work....... get the ABC (purple k) ones...theyre not that much more expensive and are better....they are also a dry chemical release so its not too hard on cleanup (compared to others)


anyone have any mounting ideas?

True, but A covers all of the bushes and stuff that might catch fire from the Jeep. Also a burning person is an "A" class fire :wink:

ABC fire extiguishers cover all fires that most people will encounter. As far as "K" class, it's pretty much the same as a "B" class fire, but focuses on the greese and cooking oil fires.

Purple-K is for B and C fires, it's really good at putting out fuel fires.

They are definatly worth the money to have in both the home and vehicle.

I tried for the driver's seat but the power unit wouldn't allow it to fit. It's pretty easy to reach from the driver's seat or even standing on the ground, dr side, if you're a little taller than me.

Funny (well kinda) story that happened when I was a kid. My dad was working under the hood of the van in the driveway, about 6-8 feet in front of the open garage door. When we got called in for dinner, he closed everything up (or so he thought) and came in for dinner. About 20 minutes later the back door bursts open and one of the local kids (about 9 or 10) literally falls through the doorway, lands on the floor and starts yellin, "The van is on fire!!!"

Well, we practically trample the kid gettin out the door and as my dad goes by he grabs the exting. Unfortunately, by the time we got outside the van was pretty much engulfed but the exting managed to prevent the garage from going up as well. The fire dept gets there and puts out the van and then hits my dad up with a $250 fine for storing motorcyles for sale (which had gasoline in the tanks by the way) from his shop in a residential garage.

Without the exting that day would have cost him alot more than $250 and the van!

Oh, by the way, the fire was caused because he had the ignition switch bypassed trying to find a short and the wire bypass overheated and caught fire.

I have an exting between the pass door and seat (Price Club 2/$20) and various others spread around the place.

I put one in my garage, just a cheapie, as well as one in my kitchen. A friend came over one day and as he was walking toward my house I noticed smoke coming from his vehicle and then a little flame. He had parked in my driveway right next to my house. Yikes. I grabbed the extinguisher from the garage and managed to stop the flame and smoke and then hit the engine compartment with the water hose until it was cool. Scary. Turns out the compressor was bad and had no freon in it, but he left the a/c button on running the compressor until it ground itself and the belt connected to it to bits, burning up and melting the belt. I replaced the fire extinguisher with a much bigger refillable unit after that. He could have burned my house down if that car would of lit up. How anyone could be mechanically ignorant enough to keep driving after the belt melts and lights up all your idiot lights is beyond me, but it happens.
