| Post subject: | Brake Noise - What is it? |
I waxed my Jeep, and as soon as I got in to drive the brakes were screwed up. Didn't know you could break anything with wax. Anyway it is a strange thing. After I shift into Drive or Reverse as I let up on the brakes they make a crunching sound. Not a moan, not a groan, not a squeal, but a crunchity-crunch. I was just out in the parking lot and I shifted to reverse, and I just sat there for a minute moving my brake foot up and down and it crunches with every twitch of the foot. I barely have to move it to get the crunchy sound. Now the weird thing is that I don't think it does it just driving around. It only seems to do it immediately after the shift, whether it be reverse or drive. Any ideas? |

check the bottom of your shoes for some nacho chips perhaps. |

I went to the dealer, but they're so busy I left and may go back Monday morning. Any clues on what this could be? The noise happens without the Jeep even moving. Just barely letting my foot off the brake causes it. If driving around and coming to a stop then there is no noise. It's only when I first shift into gear and then start to take my foot off the brake. The tires were wet last night, so maybe this has something to do with it. But they've been wet before and the brakes only moaned and groaned. Now they're crunchy sounding. Seems to be getting better as the day goes on though, so the fact that they were wet must have something to do with it. |

It's not quite that kind of crunch, but thanks for the suggestion. The noise isn't from the brake pedal itself. Comes from underneath the Jeep. And it does it without the Jeep moving, so I'm not running over nachos either. |

when was the last time you went off road? i had the same problem... well kind of. i went off raod and afterwards i washed my jeep. after that i started to have noises in my brakes (crunching). i took off my front wheels to find little rocks wedged in between my rotors and brake pads. i guess when i washed it they broke free and got stuck there. anyway check it out, who knows that may be it. |

I haven't really done anything lately that should have gotten rocks in there. I was on a couple forest roads last weekend, but just for a short distance and slow, so nothing really got thrown up in there. But maybe I'll have the ladyfriend move the brake pedal up & down this evening, so I can figure out which tire it's coming from and take a closer look. |

Its probably normal brake noise. The type of material they use in the pads make alot of noise. Unless you notice a decrease in brake performance, dont worry about it. Hopefully you washed the Jeep before waxing it.. Getting the rotors wet can make it worse. |

Well I guess the noise had something to do with washing the Jeep and getting things wet. By the time I left work today the noise is pretty much gone. I've washed it a few times now, and usually it just moans and groans a little. It was madder this time I guess. Sure doesn't sound good when it does it, but I'll just ignore it from now on unless the brakes quit working as they should. |
