Post subject:  Swaybar bushing going how do you tell???

I am getting a knock in my front end once and a while and it is coming from the wheels individually and it is only over bumps decent ones or going through rocks on the river bed. I am thinking this may be my swaybar bushings? I am wondering how people tell when their toast. If so do you need special tools to do the swaybar or can you just pull it off and put the bushings in.

You don't need special tools. You just buy the whole set of endlinks. I believe NAPA or CarQuest has them for around $80ish. Mine were very difficult to diagnose. Could not tell just by yankin on the sway bar. The way I finally figured it out was to open the passenger door and have someone use it as leverage to rock the Jeep(probably not good for th door) while I studied the endlinks. Finally I could see one end link move and "pop". Easy to replace. I think you need an 18mm socket and wrench, a floor jack to alleviate the pressure from the A arm to the sway bar and of course your tire iron to remove the tire. Hope this is helpful.

I can't tell you how to check but I had the same issue this past winter...
The whole suspension would creak over speed humps (bumps only bigger!).

I finally went on a road test with a service advisor that used to be a mechanic and he realized what the issue was....

in my case it wasn't the sway bar bushings it was all the Lower Control arm bushings got them replaced under extended warrenty nice & quiet now, but before it was creaky & if I hit a dip or bump at the right angle you could hear the whole front suspention compressing

Ok sidewayskj, heres what you do.To be sure that your swaybar links or mounting bushings are bad,all you need to do is remove the bar completely, and see if the noise is gone.Don't be driving at speeds much higher than 20mph or so as with the swaybar removed the ride becomes squirrelly and dangerous.Just find some bumps or dips close to home.If the noise goes away, then do as Neatus did and go buy some end links and bushings. At this point you will already have the job halfway done, and theres no since in putting back on bad parts. As mentioned, the swaybar end links are only about 80.00,and the mount bushings that mount the swaybar to the subframe could'nt cost much more than 20.00 or 30.00.

they were noisy, dealer said it is normal..
i went back about a month later, and specifically told them "bushings need to be replaced".
i got them replaced under 3/36 warranty... it is much smoother now.

since the dealer didn't give me hell to get these done, and worked on it immediately after I asked them with fast turnaround, I assume they are cheap and easy to replace..
