I'm moving to Durango for the summer. I've got a job working with the Public Health Service. My first paycheck is going towards a lift and tires. Anyone near there? Any places/trails that I should make it a point to visit?

Well, 20 miles north of there are some of the best trails in the country. Some are not for the faint of heart. Don't look down! You can also ride the train. I highly suggets a visit to the Diamond Belle Saloon. Old timey saloon with real dance hall girls that aren't afraid to play the part. A frequent stop of mine.

There are about a bilion trails down there, the best thing to do is cover some of the popular ones(imogene, bleack bear, ophir, stony, cinnamin, engineer, and then just take off and start exploring the little dead end gulchs and side roads..........Ive been going to ouray since I was about 3 and I still am exploring new ground.

yes, you will not regret living there for the summer, i go to school down there up at the Fort...there's plenty of wheeling, camping, hiking, and fishing all within 30 minutes simply amazing place. Not to mention you have to ride the durango/silverton narrow gauge railroad.
I can tell you the best restaurants to go to and the best local beer...if you have any specific questions let me know

VTNomad, you are one lucky dude. Great pictures Sir Sam. We are so lucky to live in Colorado, as the beauty never ceases to amaze me. So Durangotang, I am guessing you are either female, or an astronaut...love your nick name...

Durangotang: a species of great ape found in and around the Four Corners area.

I'd definately welcome a trail partner. I plan on being out there Tuesday night late (5/8) and will spend the rest of the week goofing off and looking for a place to live for the summer. I report for duty 5/14 0900.

I love local beers, the thicker and darker the better. We've got one back here that make Guiness look like tap water. My rule of thumb on beer, if it looks like piss, it probably tastes like piss.

Look forward to seeing you all out there.

yeah good point, if you like dark beer try Carver's retaurant....very popular and very good...they're known more for their breakfast than lunch or dinner but it is good eatin and drinkin. if you want a good steak go to Sweeney's just north of town and of course there's nothing better than stonehouse subs for lunch and serious texas BBQ for dinner...gotta have the cheesy potatoes!
