This video scares me from going off roading in my Liberty. Is this guy just a smuck or can these easily happen to me? What did this guy do wrong? http://videos.streetfire.net/Player.aspx?fileid=8093FEC5-D1CC-427A-B151-8ED0A91DF965&p=0 |

Smuck! Things always break when you drive hard. Drivers make the difference. |

What *didn't* he do wrong? If this is the video I'm thinking of: #1, the throttle, as was mentioned. Offroading is NOT a high-speed activity. Put it in 4low, and go slowly. A rock won't punch through your transmission if you're going 5mph (unless the full weight of the KJ falls on it, that maybe could do it). #2, he had no skid plates. If you're going to be doing the type of thing likely to land your undercarriage on a rock, put some metal under there. costof(skidplates) < costof(tranny) #3, look at the terrain first. If he'd looked at the hill he was trying to climb, he'd see that the top crests too fast (ie, had a sharp breakover angle). (if I remember correctly - I can't see the video right now, but I think I remember it). Even if he DID go slowly, he'd still be high-centered on top of it with all the wheels spinning. The only way to make it over that would have been to go up at an angle (and that is dangerous, too, since you have a higher chance of rolling). Basically, end result, drive slowly and carefully, and the chance of breaking something is slim. |

I remember this from a while back, the guy had no skids and struck a log at the top of the mound. The real reason, the guy was an idiot. |

SKID PLATES!!!! That video proves that even though you may be an occasional offroader in the family SUV, skid plates are a must. $300 dollars worth of skid plates would have saved that poor KJ's drivetrain. |

As the girl in the video said " He was being an IDIOT". True don't try to fly over terrain you don't know nothing about, but you would not go play pro-football without a helmet and pads. So why off-road without skids. If you are going to play you are going to have to pay. |

Yeah Throttle. You would think this is common sense but obviously it's not. Just take things slow and have a spotter. If he was going slow (5mph) up the hill he would of heard the clunk of the log hitting his under carriage and could of stop and backup, no harm no foul or the spotter would have seen it.... just careless hard lesson learned for him. Don't let this scare you, wheel it! |

This guy really makes the KJ look like a soccer mom hauler doesn't he? What a clod. A big-balled clod, but a clod nonetheless. |

"What did he do wrong" HE DIDN'T HAVE AN ALL J SUPERSKID and BOULDER BARS!! and a stock t-case skid... Bars/Superskid would have allowed for the breakover and the stock t-case skid would have saved the t-case (might not have even touched ). And....going just fast enough to overcome the obstical (you can always try again ....provided you didn't break your jeep the 1st time by grabbing to much of the "stupid pedal". This guy should be a poster child for birth control. |

Why does this video keep popping up on here? It has been played/posted to death. Now for those of you that want to bash or keep bashing another 4x4 (like the H2), you can understand how the KJ can quickly turn into getting bashed at other websites as not being able to off-road as this video keeps showing up on ours. Lesson learned.......for all, I hope. |

I think the reason it keeps popping up is that it's the *only* video of major damage to a KJ while "wheeling" (term used lightly, as in the video he was clearly not going out wheeling, he was probably just camping or something). Are there any videos of KJs suffering wheeling damage in a legitimate way? (not just body damage, I'm talking drivetrain damage, clouds of smoke kind of damage). |

I think we should close this topic. This boils down to unexperience driver and Safety means No accidents. If you are going to off road get your skids first then lift and tires. |

No, closing the topic and hoping the video goes away (it won't) is a bad idea. The thread needs to be here to document what has been said about the video, for the records. |
