Post subject:  "retrain" the computer to your driving style????
Hi, I just bought a 2003 renny. I was wondering about a comment in a post that I read.
****" It Will most likely have to "retrain" the computer to your driving style. It will probably default to factory settings. Should take about 50 cycles of cold to normal operating temp before the cpu is retrained".****

I was just wondering if the computer is constantly monitoring your driving style and does it change as you go? Or should i disconnect my battery for 20 minutes or so and retrain it to "my" driving style. i'm just asking because i'm sure my style is alot different from the previous owners :twisted: ..any thoughts?-MattyMac

I would do it, mine is an 03 as well it was driven by a soccer mom first. After I reset it it became more responsive and uses a bit more gas but that is because of my heavy foot.

I disconnected the battery for 20 mins., then had a problem with my trans temp light. Took it to the jeep shop and they were very upset I had disconnected the battery. The code was still there. They told me to NEVER do that.

I'd have a few choice words for them after that! I'll disconnect my battery if I want to, it's my Jeep! If disconnecting the battery breaks something, that's poor design - I disconnect the battery if I'm doing any electrical work just as a percaution. And people DO kill the batteries either by leaving something on or by the battery just reaching end-of-life. Jeez, what a strange thing for the dealer to tell you.

I actually had a Jeep Mechanic tell me not to disconnect the batter, I replied with the question of what happens when the battery dies and I need to put a new one in? He didn't answer and I told him exactly what was said; that it was my jeep and I'll do what I dang well please. I haven't been back to that dealership since. I drive an extra 15 miles to do service with a jeep dealership that encourages off-roading and mods, not one that gives you lectures on how to operate YOUR Jeep!

Not to mention that most the instructions for installing most ANY electrical/electronic device in the vehicle suggest you disconnect the battery. If simply disconnecting your battery is causing a problem then that would be a WARRANTY issue, not an operator issue. And if the "mechanic" is telling you not to do it because it causes the issue then I would tell the "mechanic" to do his freaking job and fix the thing, not pawn it off on you!

As to the thrust of the original post, yes the computer mointors the driving style. There is a section in the cruise control description in the service manual that talks about re-training the CC if you are having problems with how the CC engages; if anyone needs that info I'll post it up.
