Bell makes some good ones. However, radar dectector are becoming useless with the growing use of LIDAR (the laser guns).

Yes all the radar detectors have laser detectors, however they are useless. The laser beam on target is usually less that 10in diameter and aimed at a license plate or headlight. Hence you will never detect it unless it is aim at your radar/laser detector. Also, even if you do detect it, it only take just a fraction of a second to record your speed. Thus they already have your speed before you get a chance to slow down.

Here is a good site to read some reviews
http://www.speedzones.com/

I know someone's response is going to be don't speed. But sometime it is unavoidable, ie speed traps. Places where the speed limit goes from 45-25-15-45-15-35-15 and you never really know how fast you should be going, then they jump out and get you going 7 mph over. I don't speed and have never been pulled over for what I consider speeding. It has always been those tiny little towns that change the speed limit 8 times in a mile and you are not sure how fast you should be going.

Limit your speed to 5MPH over the limit and you won't need a radar detector.

Bell or Valintine one (IIRC) are very good but pretty pricey

Be aware of local and state laws that prohibit a radar detector.

There are some towns by me that do not allow radar detectors/jammers in ANY moving vehicle.

Shoot cross the bridge or tunnel from Detroit into Windsor and the boarder guards will confiscate your radar detector on the spot. You can't put it in the trunk, unplug it or hide it... They just take them and throw them away.

Seems like its dangerous if you dont speed now-a-days. Most people around here get all mad and tore up if youre not going at least 10mph over the speed limit. The only time I get upset is when they wont even do the speed limit. 45mph in a 55mph when youre not towing anything is not acceptable in my book.

WOW!! I am only talking about 5-10 over. Here in Iowa, if you're even 1 mph over, you're getting a ticket. So...."Let he is free w/o sin cast the first......"

I had a Passport Escort x50 8500, it was the best on the market, it was 300$ beans, worked really well, Escort just came out with another one that was really sweet. I like that mute was right on the cig plug part, otherwise they get annoying. Saved me quite a few times, but now that I have the jeep, i keep it slow, sold it on ebay yesterday for 215$ to a guy in the airfoce academy that just bought a 40k bmw off ebay as well....at least he knows a good radar!

x2 on the Escort x50 8500. I got one about 3 years ago or so, and it saved my wallet (and acually license  ) quite a few times when I was driving my pony car. I haven't bothered with it in my JK because my JK kinda drives like a Jeep and doesn't go fast  . The x50 DOES work on Laser systems, but like was previously stated, you need to be freaking QUICK on the uptake to avoid that one. It also detects POP radar, but it's the same deal as the Laser. Their customer service was also excellent-I had to send mine in for service twice and both times I had it back within a week (longest weeks ever) and it was repaired properly. At the time, it was $375 bones at Best Buy.

The detectors mentioned in this thread are pretty much top tier and rather expensive. Since you're looking to not "spend a lot of money" I'd suggest the Whistler Pro-58 or Pro-78. Both quality detectors with good range and the Pro-58 can be had for under $100 and the Pro-78 which was just released not too long ago can be had for under $150. Both have been positively reviewed by independant testers and are outstanding values. I frequent radardetector.net and consider myself a RD geek. I currently own a Valentine 1, but it's a $400 detector. If I needed a backup detector, I'd probably go with the Pro-78. Check out that forum for more information.

Radar Jammers are illegal in all 50 states, because it's a federal mandate. Laser jammers on the other hand...
