Post subject:  Rack Lights

I'm planning on adding 4 lights to my roof rack. The ones I had my eyes on are the Daylighters by KC. Would 4 150W lights kills mny battery really quick? Or should I just get 50 W units. Hopefully, this would work as the stock Hella units on the factory light bar are 50 W if I'm not mistaken. I know eventually I will have to change the battery for an optima one. Should I even bother with a dual battery setup or will that kill my altertanator?

Any suggestions and experiences installing your lights are appriciated.

Thanks

If you are going to run 4, I would only get 55watts a piece.

150*4=600watts/13.5=44.4amps which is kinda alot.

55*4=220watts/13.5=16amps which isnt alot..

I kinda thought it would be overkill. Would it then be better to have 4 50 W or 2 100 W? For driveability?

It depends what your wanting. A 100w light will emit farther then a 50w you can put together 1000 50w lights and they still won't emit any farther. Yea that spot in front of you will be darn bright but you'll still see about the same distance.

If it were me I'd go with the 4 50w lights but that's just because I'd use them for offroad and I honestly don't care what's a mile ahead of me I want to see right in front of me and you can get more of a spread with 4.

I have 4x55 watt lights on my rack and they work great. The whole purpose of them (for me at least) it to light up the area immediately around the front of the Liberty, not the road (that's what headlights are for.) I get a really bright 50 ft. area that spans from drivers to passenger door and from ground to 20+ ft. higher than the Liberty. When I'm offroad at night, it really helps to pick a nice line because you can see everything around you. Also is great for lighting up a camp area.

Well if money is not a factor, get HID's.I got 2 KC HID's on the front of my KJ and they throw a beam for well over a mile ahead of you. They are pricy though, about $650-$700 for a pair, plus the pair of them only draws like 2.5 amps.

I saw the KC HD's. They look amazing and the current draw is just phenomenal. But the price.......so definetly, I will pass on those. I think I will end up getting 4 55 W as per the posts above. It makes perfect sense what you guys said. I will be using these lights mainly for offroad, but it would be nice to have 2 that project far. No if I could turn them on, on some country road and not get busted.
