| Post subject: | fuel filter |
i was thinking about changing the fuel filter on my 04 liberty ,i read in the manual that it does not get changed with regular scheduled maintenace.my jeep has 50000 miles on it and is not showing any signs that relate to a clogged fuel filter.should i let it go for now? |

As per DCX the fuel filters on our KJ are supposed to be "lifetime" filters,I don't buy that.I changed mine at 30,000 miles,it's a pain.You either got to drop the gas tank about 4"(what I did) or some KJ's have a access door under the rear carpet to get to it from above.It's pricy to,I ended up paying about $130 for the filter(it has the pressure regulator in it already,hence the cost),but that was 1 1/2 yaers ago you may be able to get it a little cheaper by now.As far as I know only the dealer carries them(or can get them in most cases),but I could be wrong about that.It's up to you if you want to change it,it's a pain but I think it's a good idea.All my other vehicles I've ever owned I change the fuel filter at least every 30,000 miles,but I'm a stickler about maintaning my vehicles.

I'm currently at right under 90K and I’ve also heard that the fuel filters on the Liberty are “lifetime” I would like to change mine out at 100K and maybe put an inline fuel filter. Tjkj2002 do you how difficult this would be? |

Putting a inline filter is a easy job,the only problem is that the KJ's filter has the pressure regulater built in.So you would also have to mount a inline regulator also so you probally just spent the same amount of money it would have taken to use a OEM filter.I thought about doing the same thing but I reconsidered when KW AV8R showed me the extended range fuel tanks from Austrailia,I might go that route and then do a inline filter and regulator(which will be easier since the tank will be out anyways) and modify the fuel lines then.
Tjkj2002 do you how difficult this would be? |

please explain why you would need a pressure regulator for an inline fuel filter. ive never heard of that before. you should be able to put an inline filter anywhere you want, as long as its rated for the pressure of the line you are attaching it to. |

The electric fuel pumps produce more PSI than the engines can handle(different between all vehicles,but many use the same pump),the regulator reduces the fuel pressure so not to blow fuel lines,injectors,and make the engine run correctly.The correct fuel pressure for a '02-'03 KJ is 47.2-51.2 psi,'04 and above with 3 connector PCM is 47.2-51.2 psi,and '04 and above with the 4 connector PCM is 56-60 psi.Our fuel pumps will produce twice that psi so it needs to be reduced.The pressure regulator in the KJ is part of the fuel filter assembly so if you get rid of the OEM filter and go with a aftermarket inline filter you also need to add a inline pressure regulator.All fuel injected engines have a pressure regulator,and a regulator is required in carburated vehicles running electric pumps also.
