They are quite common on a Harley Davidson motorcycle so an oil cooler can be added. |

I used them on my old water cooled VWs, it allows one to run an external oil cooler or additional filtration. Sometimes they can leak due to poor machining tolerances on the engine or the plate. I usually used old oil filter gasket when installing them. |

Ok, thanks. I didn't know if that was for relocating the oil filter, or if it can be used for that, but that's the idea I had in mind. |

I ran an oil cooler on my mustang through a sandwich adaptor. Worked very well and made the oil filter easier to reach since it stuck out a little bit further from the block. Edit: Picture added so you can get an idea of the parts needed... |
