Hasnt anyone made an aluminum snorkel yet? The plastic ones are really nice but very pricey. I would think it wouldnt be that hard to fab a metal one with a good bender and some nice fittings.....? Through some herculiner on for a finish and your all set....

This kit was just created. First of its kind for the KJ. You can be the second with your idea. Go for it.

I would go for stainless, it is easier to bend without distorting/wrinkling, and it would be easier to weld if you needed or wanted too.

If only I had a pipe bender I would be all over this. Id like to make them and sell them off cheaply to everyone here so all our KJs can look beefier. I can design one in CAD here at work and then see what some of the shops around here could make it. No time for that though with REAL work to do...! :)

Pipe wouldn't work. I doubt if the air flow would be large enough. The pipe would have to be huge.

The snorkels dont look like theyre anymore than 4 or 5 inch diameter...? Why cant a pipe bender do this?

It could but, it would weigh a lot more than a plastic one.

Stainless steel is expensive!

Either way, aluminun or stainless, is going to be pricey. The dies alone to bend 4"-5" pipe is going to be sky high. Also bending thin metal in that size will always kink, better to hydroform it and that is not cheap either.

What about some type of flexible plastic hosing.....? Any thoughts? You can find all sorts of hard flex hose from McMaster Carr and those types of places for a good price.....

Flexible hose usually has ribs inside which will drastically reduce airflow.

Also andy flex hose ribbed or not will continue to flex after installation.

It just happens that I work at a place that makes tubes and ducts for jet aircraft engines, I bet we have enough scrap laying around with various degree's of bends in them to piece something together. I just dont have the desire to do it.

I bet if you found an exhaust shop that did systems for race cars or diesel trucks they could bend it for you, just give them a drawing and let them do their thing...4" might be the max though. You may be able to get your bends on an el cheapo hydraulic press type bender...fill the tubing with sand...very dry sand.... and see if it works. You would have to cap the ends and go slow, but if you can find some scrap pieces for free to practice on it would be worth a try. Thats one of the methods we have tried to bend a tube inside of a tube, Im not sure if it worked for the inside tube but the outside tube that was about 3" dia turned out pretty good in stainless.

Those are some good ideas. The stainless would prob weight 20lbs though when all is said and done with fittings. Maybe ill just spend the money and get the real deal...

I always liked the H1 type snorkels with a short vertical extender on them, but our hoods are not really set up for that as the H1s have an area up next to the hood just for it so the hood and snorkel are not opening and shutting together...

Im not sure if there would be room on the CRD, maybe the gasser though, but if I was going to make a snorkel type of setup I would want a small scoop that would enter in the plastic cowl area right next to the passengers side wiper blade. It would be a nice high pressure area, and would raise your water fording limit a bit as well. Probably would need some sort of flattened oval shaped ductwork to squeeze it in underneath the hood if it would work at all.

If I only had more spare time.....

Also remember the H1 hood opens the oppisite way than ours do(H1 hood hinges are on the front of the vehicle not at the windshield cowl area),allowing the easy snorkel setup.
