What exactly is the weak point in the front differential? I saw a picture on here of the after effects, but what breaks that causes all the exterior damage? Terry |

My understanding is that the weak point is in the housing itself, right at the front where the drivline connects into it (pinion?). If you are spinning the tires and then all of a sudden they catch on something grippy, like pavement or something, the housing is not strong enough to absorb that torque and keep the innards of the differential in-tact. The housing expands, cracks and then pretty much pops in half. This is why you see threads about people buying those collars for the front diff. They basically go around the housing right where the pinion is, and help to stop it front expanding and cracking under load. |

Ok that makes sense. Thanks! Not that I was expecting an answer but I sent an e-mail to Dana asking if they knew any way the problem could be fixed. No answer! Terry |

Al of www.jeepinbyal added additional aluminum webbing stiffeners to his front end when he pulled it out for the suspension system he was designing. If I remember right the collar is still an untested fix with no verification of it's effectiveness yet, also it doesn't work on the CRDs due to clearance problems. |

You forgot to add the .com Does anyone remember where that picture is of the broken housing? Terry |

I've got a steel collar on mine - I think the exterior is a little smaller but it's still tight and if you have salt on the roads - you'll get some corrosion. (in central Texas - salt is properly reserved for it's place on top of a Margarita glass) |
