Can you hook a tow strap to your front tow hook and pull someone out while going in reverse? |

That's the best way to pull someone out. That way you can see what your doing. |

Highly recomend making sure the vehicle you are about to pull has the parking brake off. In March while at the beach in Mexico, I spent an eternity trying to pull a friend's mini-van out of the sand, and once I got it going I looked back and his rear wheels weren't even turning. D'OH!!!! |

not the best idea if they are realy stuck I have seen folks break ring gears while pullin in reverse I think it has to do with how the power is being applied to the gear in forward vs reverse and the way the gears mesh in the diff that causes problems |

If you are pulling some one out you best option is always to use 4lo and reverse. These are just standard pulling procedures. If you have shaking issues in reverse then that is definately not normal. Your Jeep was not designed to shake in reverse. |

Shaking in reverse IS normal. There have been many threads on this and every says theirs do it and mine has since day one. Pulling in reverse is ok but I would use low as others have said. Ive pulled trees around in D and it worked out great. But you can see what youre doing like everyone said. |

So, Towing in Reverse 2-High or 4-High = Bad Towing in Reverse 4-Low = Good ? |

I tried to pull a CRD from being high centered last weekend. I was strapped to the front hooks and to his rear hitch. My RPM's would not go past 2k and couldn't budge him. Turned around and pulled him off with strap to my rear shackle. |

Nope tow going forward so that YOU can see where YOUR jeep is going it is up to who ever is driving the other rig to wach where they are going Besides all of that if you are towing with your back to what ever you are towing and somthing like a hook breaks it must pass through both the rear head rest and the front head rest to hit you towing looking at the other rig your only protection is the winsheild |

If you have the 42RLE it's better tow pull going forward, the 42's 1st gear is much lower than it's reverse.Jason thompson is correct you can sheer the ring gear pulling in reverse, the gears are ment for forward operation and temp reverse. If you have the 45RFE or 545RFE then your 1st gear and reverse is the same,3:1(42RLE is 2.84 in 1st,2.21 for reverse). |

I pulled out a stuck VW from the ice in reverse and 4LO. That was fun. Tugged another KJ from behind once out on the trail. |

I guess my KJ must be an odd ball. I do not have a shake in reverse and have had no problem pulling other people out in reverse using 4 lo. |

Do a test. Find a hill and try to back up it real slow. That should do the trick. If you go fast it won't do it. If you still don't have the fluttering transmission then you're lucky ! |

I was backing up a hill slow in most of the cases. No shudder. It's always slow in 4 lo reverse. |

My KJ doesn't shake in reverse, fast or slow. I was just out today backing up a hill on a really rough "road" (and I use the term VERY loosely) and I had to crawl because of the ruts. No shaking. Why do we think it's normal for them to shake? |

My KJ doesn't skake in reverse either. Now stopping in 4-LO is a problem on steep inclines/declines,stupid drum brakes. The whole system is getting rebuild next weekend ![]() |
