Smelly A/C

Hello,

Reciently I have noticed a "wet dog" smell when I turn on the A/C. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know to get rid of this smell?

seems like i've read this somewhere else on the KJ's. Problem is mold is building up inside the a/c system (guess it works too well....LOL). I've heard you could turn the a/c on max and on heat and wide open for a few minutes to burn off some of the mold. What I did a while back was spray some Lysol Disinfectant down the outside vents inbetween the bottom of the windshield and the top of the hood while i had the blower on 4 and the a/c setting on max but with just the ignition on not the engine. Doused that pretty good and it made the inside of the jeep smell good too.

Also shot some down all 4 of the pannel vents (with the blower off).

Yep...what Tim said about the lysol...it works.

Just empty 1/2 a can into it...and run the A/C for 10 minutes or so afterwards.

I think it's something about the condensation that builds up with the A/C on and then you turn it off and get mold.

It worked on my last car...haven't needed to do it on the Jeep yet

I had found a deodorizer disinfectant designed for vehicles A/C about 2 years ago, I forget the name of it and have since lost the can of the stuff. But with one application the smell hasn’t come back. If memory serves me correctly I found it at one of the chain auto stores.

I don't know whether or not you can get this at a parts store or not but at work we sell evap. coil foam for the mold/mildew smell. But it does work well. It comes in a can that you inject into the vent work and it suppostaly kills all the mold/mildew.

BG Products makes some good stuff. It's either called FrigiFresh or FrigiClean. One is the do it yourself version and the other is the service they offer at the shop that foams the entire inside of the AC ducts to clean them out. Depending on how humid a climate you live in this might be a regular maintenance type of thing.

This is not unique to Jeeps. One solution I practice to prevent the smelly vents is to leave the car open. When you arrive at your destination after driving with the A/C on, don't leave the car with the windows up. The condensation must be allowed to evaporate or mold can grow.

Mold needs three things to survive. A food source, water, and temperture. The food source is probably what ever dust collects in the system. The water is from condesation. And the temperatures mold likes are the same temps that humans like; above freezing and below approximately 100 degrees F. If you allow the moisture to evaporate, you take away one of those three things, and mold will not survive.
