is the front sway bar hollow?

has anyone made a quick disco setup, that will disco the sway bar in the middle where the bar is straight (in front of engine area)

I was thinking maybe a sleeve on the bar with pull pins.

could of sworn someone out west has done this?

x2 yup its not hollow, was heavy when i put it under the work bench.

x2 did it before, they apparently couldnt make them stop making noise even after a revision, so they dont make them any more.

I would like to revisit that disco setup, seems like a great solution....does anyone know anthing about it?

Can the sway bar be machined easily? Drilling/milling....maybe welding? or is it some sort of super spring steel?

I have a few ideas floating around for this.

FWIW, There was a company in Australia that was making that type of disco for other vehicles. I tried several times to get info from them and they never replied. I assume they stopped due to similar issues as discussed in other threads. I thikn their site is gone too as I can't find it now.
I still have my disco bar but I have decided that using it isn't worth the issues I was having w/ it. I have been wheeling many different trails that I used to disco or remove my bar on and I have not seen much of a difference in how my KJ works on those trails. There may be some small differences in how it would handle some obstacles but overall I have not seen the value in spending the time to remove the bar. I am talking about trails in Moab, Big Bear & Calico. Done them both w/ and w/out the sway bar and not seen enough difference to justify removing it or discoing it.

BTW, I Was a big fan of discoing or removing the bar before so my opinion on this Has changed based on My experiences. YMMV

No, the disco bar I have is not for sale. It is going in the KJ museum. :wink:

FYI - the Wrangler disconnects - cut the swaybar - mount gears on the ends and then slip a collar over the gears - it's a much stronger arrangement (and physically bigger - I don't think it would fit a Liberty - at least not in the stock location).


and on DIY mod - didn't Clint make a comment about breaking a grade 8 bolt?

LOLOLOL that thread is so hilarious, all the people that got paranoid over the expected fall of civilization when people drive around with their front sway bars off. LOLOLOL. all totally untrue, but high-larious.


Coming from someone who still can't quite get the "quote function" to work properly the whole time you have been here, your opinion is just that, an opinion. These heavy top heavy SUVs do not handle well at all without the front sway bar attached. Even if you do drive slow and safely all the time jcphoto20, it is under emergency conditions that the sway bar would serve a vital function. It is fine you don't feel like there is any need for one, but the majority of people would be served better by having the sway bar.

I wish I lived closer to you jcphoto, I would love to take you jeep for a drive.

I think most of the concern in that thread was about a disconnect failing while cornering, causing a sudden change in handling charecteristics which could lead to a wreck. Also it seemed like they didnt want someone to get hurt/killed trying something that they came up with. I think that is good practice.

I removed my rear bars and do not notice enough difference in road or off road handling to reinstall them.

Not to get off topic to much but I rather have more traction my MT/R's give me anyday than a passenger car tire(stock tire that come with the KJ).******BACK ON TOPIC******* Some sway bars are hollow,depending on the spring rate wanted.It just so happens that the ones on the KJ are not hollow.Just a bit of useless info,there are 3 types of springs,Torsion(torsion bars,sway bars),Coils,and Leaf springs(just in case you wanted to know).

For those that have permanently removed the rear swaybar:

How's the handling while pulling a trailer? I haven't removed mine, but am thinking about it, but got to thinking that that rear bar probably helps a fair amount when a trailer with a lot of tongue weight is shifting around.

Thoughts? Experiences?

I have never disconnected my sway bar on the Liberty because of a 2" lift didn't think it would help. How much does it give you. just wondering I don't even do it on the LJ and that is a different animal

I've towed 3500+lbs without my rear sway bar on with no problems,couldn't even tell the difference when towing that trailer for 1500 miles through the mountains.That's my experence.

You wont get more rear flex by removing the the rear sway bar since it's not connected to the uni-body.It will flex easier without the rear bar though,now if the rear sway bar was attached to the uni-body you would get more flex then.
