Any of you 42rle owners out there that havent got the flash update for your tranny should look into it. I told them the tranny downshifted kind of hard sometimes so they looked into it and there was a flash update to the computer for the transmission and they put it in for me. It downshifts smoothers now and quicker when going up hills. Maybe something you will want to look into.

I have an '02 Sport 4x4 with automatic I just bought it back in July '06. I found some documentation from the first work I had done at the stealership showing a original delivery date of 3/11/03. How do I find out what I need to know about my Liberty?? From researching I don't think I have this Trans. Can the vin # tell me this info or do I need to get a build sheet from DC ??? :? :? :?:

i know there is a way to tell under the hood, some type of module or something on the left hand side when you open the hood

the TCM is located on the passenger side. According to tjkj, all 02 auto trans KJs have the 45RFE, not the 42RLE

I suggest taking your vin# to the dealer (sevice dept) and ask them to print out an options report (build sheet) for you.
Free, and takes about 30 seconds, then you'll know.

Jeep Liberty's built from Production start late 2001 until April 2003 had the 45RLE (I always screw up the letters) in it. This transmission was lifted from the Dodge Ram line.... It's pretty heavy duty.

I have an '03 with the 42RLE. It just refuses to downshift out of OD while cruising on the freeway from about 65 - 75. You go up a hill or get a good headwind and you actually start slowing down. So you keep putting your foot into it. Then finally when your foot is almost at the floor it finally downshifts, but now because your foot is so far into it, it takes off.

I did get a TCM/PCM flash a year or two ago and it didn't fix that problem. I'm curious if there is a newer version.

Don't they write the version number of the flash on a sticker on the TCM/PCM? _Unlimited_ can you get the version number off the sticker?

Go here:

http://www-5.jeep.com/wccsapp/universal/J/index.jsp?appStr=wccs&titleStr=Contact+Jeep&familyStr=brand&franchise=J&actionURL=%2Fwccs%2Fbrand_forms%2Fus%2Fwebform.jsp&promotion=null&category=U

And ask them bor a "Build List" on your car. Give them your info and the VIN and they will email you back EVERYTHING that was factory installed and tell you where your car was first shipped to.

GREAT info to have if you purchased used or new.
