3 times I've had it happen now... Wait till the tank is real low and then gas up - stupid pump shuts off at $50 (Mobil). I thought the tank was full so didn't realize the first time that evidently the stations I use cut off automatically at $50 when u use a debit card! So with the NY gas prices not only am I paying a butt load but I can't even get a full tank. You'd think they must have thought that no one would ever pump $50 worth in one stop when they originally programmed the system. Gonna be a real pain when gas hits $4+ which they are already predicting for the next couple of weeks. So much for customer convenience. ![]() |

When you pay at the pump they don't debit your account for the total, it usually just drafts $1 to verify that the account is open and carries a balance. At a later date, the transaction actually goes through for the full amount at which time either the balance gets paid out by your bank, or there isn't enough for the purchase at the Gas Station lists you for collections and probably adds on return fees. I'm not exactally sure why they don't just draft the account for the full purchase, but I believe it has something to do with not entering a pin# or signing a reciept when you pay at the pump. Anyway, the gas station trys to limit there potential for a large dollar amount loss by putting a $50 limit on their pay at the pump. I can imagin you'd be more upset if you sold someone $150 worth of something and the payment returned. Also, if your card is stolen ![]() |

Actually, the do what is called an authorization for a set amount. What this does is reserve $xx.xx on your account. When you reach the amount authorized the pump will shut off. I have a big truck with a 35 gal tank. I usually have to pump until it runs out, put the pump back, run the card again and pump again until full. At the stations that auth for $50, I have to go through the process 3 times! ![]() Later, J |

do you use the mobil/exxon speedpass? i use it and have it hooked to a regular visa. i've never put more than $30 in at a time but i wonder since you have to go through extra verification steps to get one if it wouldn't cut off like that. |

Post subject: | Fuel pump shut off |
I recently filled up my Liberty and was in the process of filling two five gallon cans when the pump slowed down at $74.00 and then shut off completely at $75.00. I went in and asked if the station had a $75.00 preset limit on fuel purchases. He told me the station didn't, but the credit card companies requested the cut off so they can monitor unusual purchases indicating a stolen card. For instance, not too many people would purchase $75.00 worth of gas before the price hit $3.00 per gallon; however if someone had a stolen card and was filling up multiple cars, it would show up as an unusual purchase and the credit card company could notify the card holder to verify if they made the purchase. You can reswipe the card and keep pumping. |
