Post subject:  Froze rear caliper :-( How hard is it to replace?

Hi All,

Just because I haven't had enough go wrong with my Libby lately, I now have a frozen rear passenger side caliper. How hard is it to replace? I do my own brakes, but have never had to replace something that involves bleeding the brakes.

Any insight would be appreciated.

hehe, just did that a few weeks ago freejeep! I posted a thread called, "im loosing faith."

Its not bad at all. I had alittle trouble getting the caliper off since it was seized up, but a good sized screw driver brought it off.. Make sure you remember that it hinges at the top and swings out from the bottom. I was giving it all I had trying to get the top out..

Bleeding the brakes it nothing special. Make sure that you do not let the brake fluid reservoir go empty before you get the new caliper on. I had to take min off and leave it over night so that was a problem.. It may not be for you. If you did, you would need to bleed all four calipers..

After you get the new caliper on, go ahead and fill the fluid up to the rim and MAKE sure it doesnt go empty. Get someone to pump the brakes up(3-4times or until hard), then HOLD. Loosen the bleeder screw up while they push the pedal to the floor and HOLD it to the floor. Tighten the bleeder screw back up and tell them to pump them again. Do that until teh pedal feels firm or until you do not see air coming out of the bleeder screw again. A good piece of hose makes this job ALOT easier. :)

I ended up doing that around 5-6 times and my brake still seem alittle soft. Whenever I get a chance, Im going to go ahead and bleed the other 3 calipers..

Hope this helps freejeep..

Ohh, I got mine for $62 at Napa with a core.. I believe it was $9X before the core..

If you break open any brake line the whole system needs to be bleed.Start with the R/R,then the L/R,then the F/R,and finnally do the F/L.Always start furthest from the master cylinder to the closest to get all the air out.
