I was doing my weekly under hood inspection and noticed the one bushing closest to the oil filter is coming apart. How hard are these to do? Do i have to take the rack out and press the bushings in and out or can i just pop them in and out with my hands with out removing the entire rack from the vehicle? Who else had to replace theirs?

I have heard that it is a really involved job that takes Many hours to do. I am not sure why but my guess is that it involves removing a lot of other stuff just to get it out and then back in. I know someone here once replaced theirs.

I replaced mine about a year ago and it was very hard to get access to them. It took me about 4 hours if I remember correctly. Not a job I ever want to do again, it really made me appreciate the SFA on my CJ-7

I had the dealer replaced mine and it took about two days to do it so I'm guessing it wasn't very easy job to do. Lucky for me it was covered under warranty ...

Had to replace my whole rack and it was nasty. Shop time estimates are 6 hours for R&R but it'll take longer. Jeepin Al also had the same experience.

You can get a rebuilt rack from EBay so don't go getting one from the dealer.

Well i'm not replacing the rack yet because there is nothing wrong with it and it's a hell of a job. The job pays 5.5hrs according to mitchell ondemand. I was just wondering if i could unbolt the rack and swap the bushings real quick. :?

Is it making any noise?

Im surprised by the fact Im under there all the time and Ive never noticed any bushings on the rack. :?

If I had seen them, I would of hit them with some silicone when Im under there. I try to spray everything during an oil change or when Im detailing the underbody..

No noise i just can see the rubber peeling away from under one of those 2 big bolts that bolt it to the cradel. If you open the hood and look straight down at the rack you'll see the 2 big bolt that bolt it down. The one on the driver side is the one i see coming apart.

They are pressed in pretty tight and you won't have enough room to do both, only one side will be able to be moved so to expose the whole bottom of the bushing unless you undo the tierod ends also.Again they are in there real tight. If only a 1/8" strip is peeling off you are still okay, the bushing is over 3" long and the bottom portion is the most important part anyway.

That's what i needed to hear. So they are pressed in, thought so but wasn't sure. I got 89k miles on it, i'm sure the rack will take a dump sooner or later. I'll worry about them then. Thanks guys!!
