Post subject:  Part-time 4WD Light Gremlin

This month I took a road-trip to southern Utah for about a week. While there, I partook in the numerous trails that spider through the rolling desert west of St. George (highly recommended!).

When I pulled onto the pavement after my first day of rock hopping, I noticed that my Part-time 4WD dummy light switched on when I shifted the transfer case into 2H. When I switched into 4HI, it went off.

And so the light continued to operate in perfect reverse indication as I ran trails for the rest of the week… Until on the last day of my vacation, I reran the same trail I started the week on. At the conclusion of the ride the dummy light corrected itself.

So, has anyone else had anything like this happen? Should I be concerned about this?

The sensor that turns the light on & off is a small cylinder that resembles a retractable ball point pen. it rests on an internal part of the t-case that changes positions when shifted in & out of 4 wheel drive. The position of that cylinder changes the electrical impedance through the sensor, the idiot light comes on when the impedance through the sensor arrives at the right value, which should be when the cylinder is extended to the length appropriate to the part-time 4X4 position of the mechanicals in your t-case. The problem you are having is that your sensor is not changing impedance properly, so the light is not coming on at the correct times. It is an electrical problem, not a T-case problem & I would not worry about it.
