Post subject:  Clicking sound from instrument cluster

Within the past few weeks, I have noticed a clicking sound coming from the areo of the intrument cluster. The sound is random but only occurs when the vehicle is in motion. It is not related to the speed of the vehile; sometimes occurring every few seconds and then not occurring again for twenty, thirty or more seconds. Then it will disappear for a while only to return again later. I haven't done any investigation yet. Any ideas. It kind of bugs me.

I had a clicking sound from my dash.... turned out to be the steering column. It had broken. Jeep repaired under warranty.

Does turning left or right affect the noise?

If the speedos in the KJ are cable driven (which I doubt) it could be that, the cable usually do that when their lube is getting old and when the temps start droping outside it really becomes noticeable.

The gauges in the KJ are all electronic, no cables to be found.

Does it sound like a mechanical clicking or is it more like a popping noise. My dash tends to pop every few minutes once the a/c starts to cool it down after it's been sitting in the sun.

This clicking sound is mechanical in nature and is not any part of the dash expanding or contracting. It occurs irrespective of the temperature and is unaffected by turning left or right. It occurs when driving straight or turnering either way. It does not occur when the vehicle is stopped.

My wifes 02 WJ had a groaning sound when we turned to the right. The dealer changed the whole steering colum which didn't fix it. Finally they changed the power steering pump/gearbox (one of them) which fixed it. The sound was traveling up the steering colum and sounded like it was right behind the dash. Anyway, it's kind of simular to your problem. I wonder if this might be happening with your noise. :?:

How about with the gas peddle? On mine, if you take your foot off the gas, (coast) there is a clicking noise. When you go back to the gas it does it again. Sounds like a relay clicking on and off.

Post subject:  Clicking sound is from steering column

Upon further investigation, I have determined that the clicking sound is actually from the steering column when I turn the wheel; which is why the sound only occurs when the vehicle is in motion. I will have the dealer check it out. My concern is that this is a replacement steering column required because the original steering column was damaged when my Liberty was stolen in 2003. The replacement column came from a wrecked 2003 Liberty, against my objections. The insurance company said I could have a new steering column if I was willing to pay for it.

I would have told the insurance company 'You'll give me a NEW steering column and you'll eat the cost!' I can't abide when insurance companies want to pull this kind of crap just to save their bottom line; if the Liberty the column came from was wrecked then how can they be 100% sure there was no damage to it?
