 Post subject: Alittle word of caution..

I finally got the nerve up to try and put the trans-go shift kit in and it didnt go well. I looked over the FSM and the instructions and it didnt seem that bad at all. I took the 16 or so bolts out that hold the valve body in and that was it, it wouldnt move. I unplugged the TRS sensor thats above the driveline but the thing would move. It dropped down around a 1/2in and that was it. The thing that amazed me was it doesnt have any kinda of gasket. I kept looking for one but it doesnt and the FSM doesnt show one nor do the instructions for the shift kit mention one. It does say you can reuse the seal for the separator plate if its in good shape but I didnt get that far.

We pushed it back up and put the bolts in wrist tight and Im going to get a torque wrench that reads inch lbs tomorrow, FSM says it needs 105in lbs and I wasnt about to guess at that.

Anyway, moral of the story, dont tear into a tranny if you do not know what youre doing. If it doesnt shift right then I guess Ill take it to a shop that I trust and tell them whats going on and get them to go ahead and install the shift kit. If it shifts ok, then I guess I got 5 new quarts of atf and a new filter. It was time for it anyway. :?

I was really starting to get stressed b/c we couldnt get the valve body to go back up. We kept moving it around and finally it just popped right back up so I stuck those bolts back in as fast as I could.

I love how the FSM makes it sound so simple.. "Carefully remove valve body assembly from
transmission (Fig. 284)." Yup, careful alright. :roll:

It makes the tranny shift firmer and shortens the shifts..

Be careful tommudd, its not as easy as it seems.. I was getting sick to my stomach once I couldnt figure that valve body out.. I just do not want to spend half of what I made to get the thing installed. :?

Im still worried that something is messed up. I didnt pull on it very hard or pry it much, but something could of gotten messed up when it dropped down some. It popped right back up into place so idk. Ill probably lose some sleep tonight till I know its shifting ok.. :x

Hope you didn't loose any of the little ball bearings used in the valve body :shock: ! Welcome to the wonderful world of auto trannies,after you get your first one ripped apart they are real easy.

I didnt take the plate off, thats what holds the balls in(4 to be exact). I never even got the valve body out of the jeep! It dropped down a 1/2 or so and I just pushed it back up and bolted it back up.

not too worried as I used to tear at least 3 or 4 C4s and C6s plus 2 or so each 350 and 400 trannies apart a week. Of course thats before they started adding all this computer crap so havent looked up in one for a while! Cant be too much difference though.

well, what do you think was keeping my valve body from dropping down then? I didnt pull that hard as I was worried about breaking something. It popped right back up into place when I pushed it back up.

All i have to say is this mod was a mother @$#%! I dont know about the 42 but my 45 was a pain to get pulled down i figured it was rubber gasket, bushing, oring what ever you want to call it that goes around the big valve body connector. I just greased it up with vasaline when i put it back together and it went right in. I didn't come across any balls in my valve body although i didn't tear it completly apart. Just popped the cover off replaced some springs and seals and put it back together. Well worth it but it was a messy pain in the booty job!!! :wink:

So how did you get it down myjeep? Did you just pull really hard till it popped out? I didnt want to pull to hard as I wasnt sure what was holding it up in there.

Wow, what an evening.

I got the torque wrench which was an awesome one at that. It was a snap-on that beeped and vibrated when you reach the set torque. It had in-lbs, ft-lbs, and N-M.. But it was my friends and not mine. :(

anyway, I torqued the bolts on the valve body, put the new filter on making sure the o-ring was in place on it, then put some RTV on the pan and torqued it down. I went and took a shower to let the RTV setup then I added 4 quarts of ATF. I started it and let it run for a sec then checked it, it was just above add so I pulled it out of the garage. It went into D when pulling it out but it was slipping some and going in and out of drive. I put another quart in it which made 5 and pulled it down the driveway. I made it to the bottom and it wouldnt move so I put it into N and let it sit. I got out and checked the fluid and it was barely on the tip of the stick. I put it into 4low so the tranny wouldnt have much torque on it and pulled it half way up the driveway, we have a turn in it and I didnt want to turn in 4low. I walked on up the driveway to get some more ATF and I added a 1/2quart more and pulled it on up.

I checked it and it was still low so I added another full quart which made 6 quarts. I drove it down the road and as soon as it tried to shift from 1st to 2nd the check engine light went on and I guess it went into limp mode. It wouldnt shift out of 1st. I was cussing and was getting alittle sick when I made it back home(not even a mile). I added another quart which made 7 and it was between add and full, so off to walmart I went since I only bought 7quarts. I thought the tranny would take around 5 and I wanted to change the tcase so I only got 7.

Moving on, I added another 3/4 quart making almost 8 quarts total. I drove it around 5miles or so with many down shifts+acceleration's and it seems to be ok. It was shifting alittle strange but Ive heard it will do that after a fluid change and I also unhooked the battery to reset the check engine light.

My stomach is still alittle upset. It will be for a few days till I drive more to make sure its ok. :?

Yeah kind of just pulled on it and wiggled it around and it came down. It was somewhat heavy and being covered in atf did not help. Remember i have the 45rfe dont know if it's much differnt than the 42. I didn't have any problems except for the pan gasket leaking from the rtv. I then used a rubber pan gasket from the local parts store. No more leaks. Did you get it installed or no?

No, I didnt put the shift kit in. Once I figured out the valve body wasnt coming out as easy as I thought it was I just bolted it back up.

I think my entire problem with it not shifting and such was just low fluid. I never thought it was take 8 quarts and I didnt want to end up with to much fluid in it. The RTV doesnt seem to be leaking any and I hope it doesnt.

while reading thru the posts, i was trying to remember how dropping the valve body went. i am fairly sure i had to pull on it. i was expecting it to fall out after the last bolt was removed.....and when it was all said and done, i'm pretty sire i put 8 or 9 quarts in it. i also bought 7 to start, but was still low after all 7 were in. i was able to drive it alright with only 7 quarts though.

i didn't think it was all that difficult, however it was messy.....give it some time and try again, it will be worth it.

well, I started with 4 quarts so you can imagine how low it was. I didnt drive it much at all with it low, only enough to feel it slipping and then it went into limp mode.

I was just worried about messing something up since I didnt know what was holding it in there. Im not sure if Ill ever be able to get the nerve up to take it apart again. Im going to call a shop I know is good and see what they will quote me on it.
