My 04 limited water pump went out the other day,Now the temp gauge runs right in the middle(straight up and down) now its my wifes and i never drive it so i dont know if thats normal or running hot,fan comes on and keeps the temp right there ,never gets hotter or cooler,,Where does your run??

I also refilled the system following the procedure on this board so that shouldn't be the prob

Welcome to L.O.S.T. white7.......Most liberty's with the 3.7 engine seem to run just a little hotter than other vehicles. But mine also runs about straight up and down on the temp. gauge, especialy during the summer months.Just keep your eye on the coolant level in the radiator and overflow tank, and I don't think you'll have any problems.Maybe someone else will chime in with something different, but this is just my experiences with mine.Again,Welcome aboard....I think your gonna' like this forum, and most of the people on here.

Yes mine runs about right in the middle (straight up) so you are fine. Should be nothing to worry about.

Post subject:  Mine TOO

My '02 Sport 3.7 w/ Automatic reads straight up also. This should be normal when I bought it with 89,000 on it, I said the A/C had to work right off the lot NO A/C. So I came back the next day and they charged me $100.00 deducatble to repair the A/C. Then I took it straight to a muffler shop, while on the lift noticed the front was leaking fluid. So back to the dealership, But after raising much He!! they replaced the radiator, since then coolant level Staight up. Then took it to my local repair guy {who is 5 STAR certified} while he replaced all fluids with AMSOIL he told me the rear dif needed rebuilt so another $100. Deductable he also had the LBJ's replaced. By this time I was Royally Pi$$ED OFF. So I went back to the Dealership one more time only this time I had already purchased and after market Spare Tire Cover and with Glue on Embroidered Letters Had written on the cover "RAPED BY MEDVED" after showing this to the SERVICE MANAGER and the Dealership Owner they happily refunded all my money as long as I changed the Cover "GO FIGURE"
Any way Your coolant Temp is normal.

Mine ran with the temp gauge straight up and down when stock. The 3 core aluminum radiator puts it a little to the left of straight up and down now.

mine too after a dual air intake and flowmaster super 40.

yup, mine has always ran straight up and down. Ive never seen it move once the engine has warmed up.

As long as your engine is in the acceptable "warm" range the needle will show straight up and down. That range might be as wide as 100 degrees.

Prior to computers in cars the temp gauge would swing all over the place depending on the conditions (hot, cold, stop and go, freeway driving, etc). Once computers started being put in cars the manufacturers figured out people had a better driving experience (i.e. worried less) if the temp gauge didn't move around so much.

So now a days as long as the the temperature is in the manufacturers acceptable "warm" range it puts the needle straight up.

I saw this first hand on my WRX. I put an aux temp sender and gauge on it. Once warmed up the factory gauge would put the needle dead in the middle. My aux gauge would swing +/- 50 degrees depending on conditions just like the older cars did.

Yes back in the good old days we had actual gauges that told how everything was operating, then since most people were either too lazy or didnt know any better they did away with guages and went with idiot lights now we have progressed to idiot guages  Its like oil bath air filters but then no one remembers them any more do they

Ah, the good old days when cars came with Oil PSI, Coolant TEMP, Voltage and Fuel Levels along with a speedometer and odometer.

The guys with the gage pods might have some say in this matter of the temp gauge reading??

mechanical gages have a much faster response time than *most* electrical gages....the mechanical gages fluctuates with engine load and the thermostat regulating the flow thru the radiator. the electrical gages tend to smooth the temperature readings out due to the slow response time....with my data logger recording coolant temp, it stays pretty constant after it is warmed up....the gage reflects the readings of the temp sensor

Post subject:  How about the ScanGuage???

I have a ScanGuage I , I now get a numerical temp reading and it does change up and down. I'm old school I miss getting true readings. I like the ScanGuage because it gives me the information That I had on Older vehicles,'70 Buick GS, '74 1/2 Datsun 260Z 2+2., '80 Toyota Celica GT. AHH the good old days when big brother didn't protect us from ourselves :x

they protect us from ourselves due to the fact that there is too few of us who know and too many of them that do not know or care to know

wow that is almost a very deep thought , must be time for bed!

Mine reads just slightly to the left. The Libby is a lot better than my old KJ. I used to have to run the heater in the summer time when I was stuck in traffic. Brutal.

Yeah slightly to the left of vertical, but still nearly vertical if you only glance at the gage. I have never heard of a KJ overheating though in my entire time on the LOST boards so the engineering seems pretty sound.

I wonder what the cooling capacity will be like in a couple more years... I am really pushing to get a minium of 200K miles out of the Liberty if I can.
