Left work last night - no problem. This morning wouldn't even crank, however, the alarm went off & wouldn't shut off. Till it too died.

Jumped it with one of those jumper packs and got it onto the highway (probl not a smart idea) so I could get it to Strauss which is 2 quick exits away. The whole way there every light on my dash board is strobing on & off so I was worried it was something else. :?

Turns out it was just the battery. I guess not too bad for an '03 w/85K on her. At least It wasn't an alternator or something else.

Bought a AC Delco deep cycle w/a 6 yr warranty for under $100 installed. Better rating than the Mopar one.

I'm just waiting for my battery to die so can get an Optima. Maybe I should get it now instead having to buy it at a parts store. Its a 2002 with 73K.

I made a "pre-emptive strike" on the Libby battery last week and replaced it with an 8 year battery from Autozone for ~$85.

The Libby would be 4 years old in 2 months and I always figured anything past 3 years on a factory battery was living on borrowed time.

I didn't want Charlotte stuck somewhere with a dead battery.

funny...our 03 I noticed this weekend had a pretty big crack on top and acid was coming out a little...corroding all over the place. Had to replace ours too although it was still working...cheap autozone battery baby!

How long are stores allowed to keep car batteries on their shelves? I wouldn't want to buy one that's been there a long time...or have one sit in my garage until the current one dies. I'll just call USAA if I get stuck somewhere with a dead battery. Cell phones are useful that way....except in the mountains. That's what those charging packs are for. Just a jump to get you somewhere safe.

My battery was dead once in the garage when it was less than 2 yrs old. Had a friend jump it and never had a problem since. Starts up everytime with no hesitation or needing a second try. 36K (yep, just past that warranty mileage) and 2yrs 10 months old (ownership) and 3 yrs 1 month since build (and battery installed).

I plan to get that Optima when the OEM battery croaks.

I was wondering that too. How can you tell if you're getting a new battery? Do they have date stamps on them somewhere? Even flashlight batteries have best before dates. My KJ is now 4 1/2 years old, no problems with the battery so far, but I noticed a small amount of corrosion around the posts the other day. Probably replace it before winter.

Good question on battery age.

David-I would have thought you'd have more miles on it. I've had mine 3 years and 10 months, I've got 84k on it. Then again you're closer to Moab...

Red Optima for normal use, Yellow for heavier cranking like big old stereos and winches right?

Nanette,

work is five miles away. If you take off two trips to Ohio, I'd be around 31K instead of 36k.

Batteries are stamped with the month and year of mfg. Different brands are stamped in different places. You just need to look it over and pick one with the most recent date. Also if you get it at a place that sells a lot of batteries, they should be fresher.

Dang Tokyojoe thats low mileage, trade me for a while so we can get some miles on there for you! Bought mine Sept. 21, 2004 and now has over 83000 on it! Wish I could keep one low mileage.
Still stock battery, brakes etc yet!

Tom

Yikes! Try living in the desert... We are lucky to get a battery to last 18 months here. My Optima Red Top only lasted that long... I put an Interstate one in after it, and it recently sprang a leak in it's final throws of death. It ended up corroding the positive cable terminal completely to acidic mush. The latest is one from Autozone to at least take advantage of their proration (is that a word?) program. Joy!

Todd

About 9 years ago I worked for Montgomery Wards (MONKEY WARDS). I worked for a month in the automotive store, selling Tires, Shocks, and Batteries. The job didn't last long (commission only) couldn't make any sales during week days betweem 5 and 9 . All I did was take the payments other salesmen had made during the day. But I digress any way the one thing I did learn was that INTERSTATE made a superior battery. I admit this was 9 years ago (things change) OPTIMA didn't have the name back then. So I'm just saying this is a rant of an old man, but do some research that's what L.O.S.T. is all about. As for the OPTIMA the same shows I see on SPEEDTV that boast of the OPTIMA also endores the TORNADO air intake.
Just making a point but if I ware a hat know one will notice :!: :!:

LEAD :D FOLLOW :P or GET OUT of THE WAY   8) :-)r :-)r :-)r
