Rear seal leak

Hey guys! I was changing oil today so I thought I would check all the fluids as well. When I looked at my rear diff I noticed that where the drive shaft goes in the rear diff there are some drops of fluid. I changed my rear diff fluid around 3000 mile back or so and I don't think it was leaking then. Could it be that I put too much fluid in there and its leaking out from the seal? Any other suggestions? Do I need to replace the seal and is it hard to do?

Mine started leaking on my 06 CRD, Too much torque I guess. Anyway I took it back to the dealer and the replaced it under warranty. I only had about 18,000 miles on it.
Is your jeep still under warranty? If so let them look at it.

would they count that under powertrain or bumper to bumper?

driveline and axles are part of the powertrain

To much torque? From what? Did you take the pinion out and get it to tight or something?

I got 30 miles before the warranty runs out and the dealership is around 50 miles away so I guess its up to me to fix it. If I drain some of the rear fluid could it quit leaking? Is it hard to change that seal if I was to do it myself?

Call the dealership up and tell them what you have and how many miles you are away surely they can fudge a little bit

But then we are talking about a dealership.....
depending on your mechanical knowledge its not that hard of a job, but then whats easy for me may be hard for you :lol:

All I have to say on torque is SP Diesel module + CRD = Pure Fun :lol:

You could always tow it to the dealer :-P

No,but a good way to kill the bearings and then require a rebuild.It takes like 30 min to change the seal out and the seal costs like $15.

Well I drained a little fluid. I just opened the fill plug and let it drain for while, I got a nice little puddle under the rear diff, so I definetly put a lot in there when I changed it. The manual says to have fluid in rear diff to be 1/2 inch below the fill hole and after I drained it some the fluid still pours out a little when I take the plug out so I guess Im still good. ANybody has instructions on how to change out the piniol oil seal (I think that is the name of it)?

Thought about towing it to the dealer but I think it will be cheaper to fix the seal lol :lol:

What I want to know if its my fault the seal is leaking because I overfilled it or is it just wear and tear? And If its wear and tear at 36007 miles that I have leaky seals I can't imagine what will be leaking at 50000.

You shouldnt need to have it towed. It will be fine to drive as long as the rear diff has fluid and it obviously does since its above the fill hole.
