I was playing around yesterday and forgot how to get out of 4-low. I didn't see it in the manual either. I got out, but not sure if I did it correctly. I was going real slow, so I shifted to neutral, then shifted out. The only thing was that when I shift to neutral the jeep just stops. Am I supposed to shift to neutral to get out? |

sounds right you mean the jeep coasts to a stop,(normal) or abruptly comes to a stop like you slammed on the brakes?(not normal) |

When I shifted to neutral it came to an abrupt stop, not enough to jerk your head, but it just stopped immediately. I tried a couple times and that is what confused me. I don't remember it coming to a stop in the past. |

I would check your rear brake pads to make sure they are not sticking, You can also tell by checking how hot your rear rims get after a long drive. |

It helps to be ever so slightly coasting down a very slight incline. If you don't have that luxury, try stopping with one tire on a rock or something, that way you can throw it in neutral with the brake on, and then let go of the brake and the vehicle will just move a few inches and while it's moving, shift quick. The reason you have to kinda be moving is that the 4hi to 4lo gears are not synchronized....so when you go to shift into or out of 4lo, the high points on the gears could potentially just smack into each other...not allowing them to mesh. If the tranny is in neutral...not really moving, and the tcase is moving just a tiny bit because it's connected to the driveshafts, then you should be able to pull quickly and get the gears to mesh right away. Get my drift?? It's a lot easier to explain this to someone when they're next to you in a vehicle.....I hope I did alright |

Still sounds normal to me unless it just all out locked up. It has alot more torque when its in low so its easier for the engine to move the Jeep when its idling. When you shift out of 4low, it no longer has the mechanical gearing. |

oh yeah, your situation definitely doesn't sound out of the ordinary to me. keep in mind that when you're using 4lo you probably have your tires aired down...so a lot more rolling resistance, and you're not on pavement, which means a lot more rolling resistance.....etc etc. |
