Last year in the end of July I purchased my Patriot Blue Sport 4x4 3.7 L and a automatic. After many weeks of pondering this situation. How can you indentify a '02 Lowered for saftey issues and one that has never been touched. I'm an OLD Time Shade Tree Mechanic, I even have the original shop Manual for my KJ (got this with the Jeep at the stealership) I new they were raping me but I got a lot of goodies out of MEDVED JEEP in Colorado. If someone would let me know how to tell I would feel a whole lot better. Not to mention get me in the proper direction for mods. Please advise!!! I am planing to in the distant future replacing my suspencion with a Airbagit full Air Ride suspension system.. I admit it is pricy but since it will not only help off road but add so much more road maners on the street. I agree it ain't cheap but having the ability to squat down on the highway or even back roads to corner and perform like a sports car. Come to the end of the road hit the lift button and get what ever lift you require for this run and change it to each driving situation. How COOL could that be ![]() |

Hi Rush345, The pre-lowered KJ has rear drumbrakes. I owned a 2002 pre lowered KJ and I now own a 2003 KJ, the first year I kept banging my head getting in my 2003 KJ as it is that much lower and I keep banging the front skid on the slightest bump. So you have crap rear brakes but good ground clearance ![]() |

IIRC, The build month will be pre-April 2002 for a pre-lowered. Those built after April of 2002 were lowered. |

But he also has the 45rfe tranny. I would give up rear disc brakes for that tranny. You can tell just by looking at the Jeep. Park next to a jeep that you know is 03+ and look at them. Its easy to tell if you have the pre-lowered. |

The cut off was April. If your Liberty was built in 2001 or pre April 2002, it's got the longer springs and original tuning on the powersteering pump. At least the drum brakes have a parking brake that works. ![]() |

![]() No, not really. I have a 5-spd. The parking brake on my '02 pre sucks hairy goat junk. I've had the cable replaced, tightened, brakes done, whatever over the course of 3 years and just stopped relying on it. I turn the wheel to full lock when I park on a hill so the jeep will roll into the curb god forbid is starts moving. Had it in the driveway (which is a moderate hill), in 1st gear, with the P-brake on and it started moving. Thank god the wheel was turned just enough to guide it into my front yard instead of down the whole driveway. Since then, I ALWAYS keep the steering locked to one side. I've experienced slippage while parked too many times to ever trust the e-brake again. I even carry a set of chalks (sp?) around just in case. |

I'll roll a good couple of inches with my brake pulled all the way. If you find a 2002, they could have swapped out the springs/shocks/struts by now just from wear and tear..... |

Open the drivers door,on the edge off the door is a white tag,it has the tire info and such,it will have the manufactured date under the VIN,just the month and year(mine is 02/02-feb of '02).Since the delievery date is in '03 I highly doubt it sat at the factory for over a year,I'd say it is a lowered KJ. |

Thanks RL I appreciate it. |

Cool! Your truck is unique. Or the plant was just using up some inventory remaining??? My truck was a January 02 build I think - I'll have to check again |

I've heard the Pre-Lowered 02's have the 4X4 badge behind the last rear window on both sides of the KJ. Mine's Pre-Lowered and has this, so I'm guessing there's some truth to this. |

That was the original placement for the 4x4 indication. I always thought that it was a cost savings move to cut the badge down to 1 and move it to the tail gate. |

I think all 2002 models have drum brakes - throughout the model year. The pre-lowered version stopped being made in April 2002 and the most accurate indicator is the "4x4" badge location. Pre-lowered models have the "4x4" under the rear most side window. Models made after April 2002 with the "lower" suspension have the "4x4" badge on the tailgate. |

Mine has it in both the tailgate and by the rear side glass...it's a late build '02 (mid or late march IIRC) |
