LOST JEEPS :: View topic - Replacing Auto tranny with NV3500 5-speed?

It could be done, But you'd really the Manual trans vehicle in its entirety, because i'm guessing there are lots of brackets and such that are you going to be different, or you won't know what to do with them without seeing how they were.

And yes, i like the idea of the swap.

Wonder if i blow up my trans under warranty if they will do the swap for me :lol:

Has anyone done this yet. Out 03 limited would be a blast without the Autosquish trans.

I can get a used 5 speed out of an 02 Libby with a 3.7 for $1K, and am thinking this might be doable with a off the shelf parts.

I figure thing needed to add/Change:
Tranny w/ Cluth Assy. and Shift tower
Manual tranny fly wheel
Interior Conosole from a Renegade or Sport
Renni or Sport Pedel Assy & Master Cyl.

Then possibly the ECM and PCM (?)

Not sure if both the Command Track or Select tack would match up the the NV3500

Don't forget clutch hydraulic lines, all necessary brackets, and wiring harness. Possibly the starter, instrument cluster and other related parts would have to be changed. You really need the donor vehicle for these parts. In my opinion these parts are too expensive to justify an auto-manual swap.

Plus you gotta wait for it to engage. I found a stick is alot quicker. Love the auto for traffic though, stick is to much of a pain in the rear. It's all preference. To the original poster you can probably get a used auto for alot cheaper than doing a manual swap after it's all said and done. A half decent clutch alone that will handle wheeling will probably set you back $300-$400.

Post subject:	Why Get a Stick??
I'm honest enough to admit I'm Hard on a standard transmission maybe a ZOOM clutch known for their ability to take abuse. But any other standard shifts I chew them up. Give me a stick and I drive like I'm at LeMans I put them through the wringer. Give me a HD Automatic it will last a lot longer and take the abuse better.

Which transmission does your '03 have, the 45RFE or 42RLE? If you have the 45RFE, an upgraded torque converter and reprogramming kit for the valve body will make it shift much firmer and faster. Top it off with a B&G flash and you will be really happy. If you have the 42RLE, it will help, but it doesn't make as big of a difference.

Don't forget the pedal set, slave and master cylinders and hydraulic line. And I'd go with the NV3550 five speed. It's tough as nails, where I'm not sure about the NSG 6 speed. For motivation, I LOVE mine and couldn't imagine my KJ without it!
