Post subject:  Loud Whining sound when I start the KJ

Maybe someone here can give me a hint before I get fleeced at the shop...

For some reason, when I start the engine (especially when cold) I hear a lound whining sound that slowly subsides. It kind of sounds as though the starter motor stays connected even after the engine starts, but I'm not sure if that's what it is. It seems to be intermittent, although it's happening more often than before.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ed

The KJ is notorious for weird noises during cold starting. Anything under 50 degrees and mine makes some horrible sounds almost like a belt is slipping. Dealer says "operating as designed" and has been confirmed by lots of people here.

Yeah, I'm familiar with those sounds. This one is new and different, however, and it's doing it in 80 degree weather. I have about 50K miles on it and I'm afraid something is about to give.

My power steering pump whines as described in cold weather. It has done this since I picked it up from the dealership.

I have the same thing during cold starts and have had it checked out, nothing wrong, normal noises. Weird. :D

My 04' Renny does it as well when cold, nothing outta the ordinary other then the noise and it does go away after about 2 minutes.

I must be getting paranoid :?

Is the noise you guys are hearing louder than the engine? Sounds like something spinning really fast?

Does it sound like it could be your belts?

I'm pretty sure it's not the belts, although I'm not ruling anything out.
I'll try to pinpoint it more tonight, but it sounds like it would if you kept cranking the engine after it fired up.

Mine sounds like a higher pitched spinning noise that is a little louder than the engine. I think I know exactly what you are talking about and its just one of those noises that happends I guess. I had the whole thing (belts and all) checked out and it was fine, and it is only during cold weather.

No worries!

Try turning the steering wheel when it is making the sound. If it is the power steering pump, the pitch of the sound will change.

The noise sounds about right, although it does it in hot weather as well.
It's an '02 and has never done it before. That's why it's gotten my attention.

My power steering pump was making noises for a while. Then just one day it magically disappeared. I checked all the fluids and everything was fine.

I have also noticed that my fan kicks on at full speed when I first start it, and will stay on for a few miles until it warms up. I doubt this is the noise you are hearing, but thought I would throw it out there.

Check your starter.

Since it is happenning intermittenly and in warm weather, it is probably what mine did.

The throw-out bearing went bad in the starter and the starter was slow to disengage. I had mine replaced under warranty at 12500 miles.

It looks easy enought to do yourself, and I think there are cheaper (in price) aftermarket starters available now.

Is the throw-out bearing part of the starter itself, or is it something that the starter connects to?

I'm thinking that that's what the problem is. I'm going to try to isolate the sound tonight.

Thanks,

Ed

it is a part in the starter, it is what the solenoid sends forward to engage the flywheel to start the motor.
