I got a deal on a pair of Hella FF1000 lamps 
And want to mount them to the sides of the grill with oem bumper, anyone mount a pair of lamps there? Just curious about going through the bumper cover or making a bracket to extend out between the grill and bumper.

Are those the refurbished Hellas you can find on the web. I'm thinking of getting those, am curious about condition. BTW, how do those lights perform in the dark, if you've tried them yet. Pics (like vs. stock) would be great!  I want to know if they would be worth getting over the 500's.
For mounting, I'm going to look into making some custom mounts that bolt underneath the bumper and come up, kind of like Jeepjeepster has. I don't like the idea of drilling holes or even screws into the top of my bumper. If you've already mounted your lights, do you pics of the mounting? |

They are still in the box. They are new and are on special here: http://www.rallylights.com/hella/ff1000.asp at the moment for 89.75 for the kit. I just finished modding the lights on our PT Cruiser, My Ram2500 is next and then the Jeep so it might be a while yet as I get the time. The fella that runs that site is very helpful, highly recommended. Claims they will be excellent with just the standard 55w bulbs however there is available the 55w +50% and then 100w too. I plan to use them to supplement the high beams on the road so don't want to be overkill. |

No ideas so I drilled the bumper cover, mounted them much like the pic I posted though that isn't a Liberty. Don't think I will like it cuz the cover is not sturdy enough so I expect to see light beam bounce, not real happy 
The mounting point had to be forward enough to clear the grill which meant attaching to just the cover and no sheet metal, I should have known better. I suppose plan B will be to add a brace under the cover somehow. |

What I did to add some strength was to place a piece off flat stock I got from the hardware store under the bumper cover. Shown here its laying on top next to the lamp. My idea was to bolt it to the lamp stud under the cover and also to secure it to the body metal with another bolt however I found that once in there and sandwiched between the grill support and bumper plastics it had eliminated most of the light flicker. 
Here is what they look like finished: 
No switch installed, just ran the relay trigger wire to the high beam so they always come on with the high beams. |

When I changed to silverstar's I always felt the low beams were good, the highs however just seem to scatter out and not do so well. These Hella's with the standard 55w bulb are plenty for use on road to supplement the highs. Down road lighting is very good now. Adjustment is crucial for proper operation, I am fortunate to have a Vision 100 aimer. |

I bet that light aimer really speeds up adjustments. Can you take light intensity readings? |

It reads 1000 to 100,000 Candelas however to be honest I rarely pay much attention to that only because there are no specs to compare to. Its helpful to establish left to right if there is a difference that could be indicating trouble with a particular sides wiring.
