If I were to put in a new diff, say the trutrac, how hard is it to set the lash and whatnot? I've been told it needs to be done professionally but I am mechanically inclined, I've rebuitl a few engines with noe dire results so I'm pretty handy with a wrench. What is needed to do the job yourself? If I don't have to pay someone to do it for me I think I'd rather get the TruTrac as opposed to the Powertrax. |

You will need a dial indicator and base to measure the backlash and a way to bolt the setup into one of the cover bolt holes. Digital calipers to measure the shims. A way to press new bearings on the new differential. Torque wrench is also needed. I found the book on differentials from Randy's Ring and Pinion a good reference. You will need to locate a place that carries the shim stock you'll need, forget the dealer unless you are rich. Alternate transportation in case the Jeep is down longer than you expect. All the tools needed to remove the differential from under your Jeep. I did this job myself but read a lot before attempting it. It went good. Its kind of like a hard hunt. A pain while doing it, glad you where there, glad when it is over, planning next one. |

Buy a master install kit and it will come with all new shims,ring gear bolts,seal,and bearings.You'll need a press for the bearings and a dail indicator and a book that lists all the specs for the 8.25 or D30A. |

What kind of press would I need? A hydraulic shop press or what? How much does a master install kit cost? Thanks! |

For the 8.25 rear end there's a special tool - I don't remember the number - (I'll add later if I find it) it goes in through the axle shaft to set the adjustment - it's about $35-40 online - and it'll be a 5 minute job to adjust - without it - it'll take hours of adjusting and measuring. |
