Post subject:  2005 Liberty Recall

Forbes.com is reporting that DaimlerChrysler AG is recalling some 538,000 vehicles, of which the 2005 Liberty is included. Seems it is due to some transmission problems. No word if this applies to the non-US models as well.

I just went on jeep.com to the Owner's section and typed in the last 8 digits of my VIN and their site says there are no outstanding recalls or notices for my KJ.

allscan,
After posting the message, I visited a bunch of automotive sites, and none of them had posted the recall yet. Guess they are far more "LOST" then we are, and get the information slower.

I'm calling my dealership today to hear if my Canadian Libby is also included in the recall.

That's from the National Highway Transportation Safety Admin. if my memory and googling are correct, the 42RLE is the 4-speed automatic transmission. Looks like the 5-speed autos are in the clear, including my CRD.

Is there any diff. in the trans. of an '05 Limited vs. an '05 Rene?

I haven't had any issues with my trans., but a buddy of mine just bought an '05 Limited and there was a fairly audible trans' noise. Guess I was just lucky?

The dealer ended up taking his car back and he ended up with an '06 G.C.

Here's a post from the Yahoo Liberty Club:

The following recall affects 2005-model-year vehicles of the following models:

Dodge Dakota, Durango, and Magnum
Jeep Liberty and Wrangler
Chrysler 300

It affects 2005 models ONLY.
The NHTSA notice below is self-explanatory.
______________________________

Year : 2005
Manufacturer : DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 05V460000
Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 256409

Summary:
ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 42RLE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, THE CUP PLUG THAT RETAINS THE PARK PAWL ANCHOR SHAFT MAY BE IMPROPERLY INSTALLED. IF THE SHAFT MOVES OUT OF POSITION, THE VEHICLE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE 'PARK' POSITION.

Consequence:
IF THIS OCCURS AND THE PARKING BRAKE IS NOT APPLIED, THE VEHICLE MAY ROLL AWAY AND CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.

Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSIONS AND INSTALL A BRACKET TO ENSURE THE PARK PAWL ANCHOR SHAFT IS RETAINED IN THE PROPER POSITION. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

Notes:
DAIMLERCHRYSLER RECALL NO. E14. CUSTOMERS CAN CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236; (TTY:1-800-424-9153); OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.

However, I searched the NHTSA for that TSB and found no results...so...I dunno...but then again, with what BRPN#2 posted it certainly looks like it's the real deal!

How do I tell which trany I have?

Shouldn't this be in the TSBs and Warranty Issues section?

If any of you opted for the extended warranty, you're entitled to a rental car anytime you bring it in for service. If you have a legitimate dealer, that means ANY service, not just warranty work. ie, for a $25 oil change at the dealership, you get a $35/day rental from enterprise. I got a Dodge Durango for a day, it was huge, hard to drive/see from, and had a really badly delayed acceleration. But it was a free rental for the day.

I just checked on my jeep, and I don't have that recall problem. Makes sense, since I don't have the auto transmission, but I figured it was a good opportunity to check for recalls anyway.

ok well after going there this morning as they told me it would be ready....got there and had to wait an hour. Regardless here is what they said....they called DC and according to the VIN the jeep wasnt at risk for it but here is what they had to fix straight from the reciept

" Customer states that when the vehicle is put in park it starts rolling backwards. There's no park on vehicle need to replace park anchor pin. It had fallen out removed and replaced transfer case. and valve body to repair."

Of course this was all covered underwarranty and didnt cost us anything.
