Has anyone tried to make their own homemade skorkel?

I want one like this!, but I dont know how he made it, so does anyone have some ideas

From personal experience I can tell you that the easiest way to make one that really looks good is to take it to a good exhaust shop and have them make it out of 4"(ish) exhaust piping. Most of them welcome a different project and should do it pretty cheap (maybe $100 on the high end). Even the good benders won't be able to clear that 90 into the fender if you are planning to use the stock airbox. You can find one of those black rubber 90 degree fittings at home depot that will work great and does form a good seal. I haven't done it on the KJ's but my previous off road rigs all had them.

(I'll be doing this as soon as mine doesn't look like a soccer mom rig :lol:

you could always order one of the new Aussie snorks being delivered to the west coast. All made for the KJ...same amount of work required prepping the vehicle tho. there's a link somewhere for it...anyone??

There is a lot of engineering that goes into a properly working snorkel...sizing and water shedding are two that are paramount. The designs to shed the water before it hits the filter are something that needs to be added to any system...

You can buy the rain caps by themselves from a few places....donaldson was one I think. That and a rubber flapper style drain valve added to a low catch basin type point in the tube would probably do the trick of dealing with rain.

that was my thinking in going with one that has been tested and developed just for the KJ. $375 is a really good price considering the job at hand.

I will type up more later on regarding the snorkels. I do agree that this is something that must be done carefully or else you can certainly do damage to your engine. But with the aftermarket caps that you can buy for them now, water shedding really isn't much of a concern as far as I can see.
