Post subject:  QUESTION ABOUT THE FRONT RACK?(UPDATE)

HI ALL, (HAPPY HOLIDAYS)
I was changing my oil yesterday, and noticed that the front rack&pinion where it bolts to the front sub frame, there is part of a rubber o-ring hanging out. it looks like a bushing, plus when you move the steering wheel back and forth the whole rack is moving!!
Now is this something that i can fix myself? looks easy enough to do. is there a write up in here that i can read about this? and what would be the torque on that nut and bolt?

thanks jnj-z

THE 7/70 IS ONLY GOOD ON DRIVE TRIAN, SO THE RACK ISNT COVERED! THE BUSHING IS $15.00 THE LABOR IS OVER $400.00 TO START THE JOB,SO I BOUGHT THE BUSHING AND I AM GOING TO TRY IT MYSELF! A NEW RACK IS ONLY $150.00

I read a post about rack a pinion a while back and the guys decided that it would take almost the whole day to fix those bushings so the post was left at that. I think tjkj was one of the guys with the same problem try asking him.

Heck I haven't even thought to look at my steering rack bushings. Maybe I should...and maybe that's why the KJ doesn't have the zippity-doo-da racecar response now that it did 50k miles ago

I haven't even thought to look at mine, but they weren't hard in any of the other R&P steering cars I've had (mostly 80s T-birds). Of course, the rack is behind the front wheels in the KJ, and on those cars the rack is up front. Maybe I've subconsciously avoided looking so I don't know they're bad

*EDIT* wait, no, the tie rods are in the front of the knuckles..now i HAVE to look

I got the same problem except my rack is not moving yet just the bushing coming apart on the driver side. I was told the rack has to be removed which is a mofo to get those bushings in and out.
