is the dana 30a the same shape as a dana 30

No, the interior dimensions are different. I am pretty sure the pinion shaft is longer on the 30a as well. Exterior, I think is close, but have not looked close.

The ring gear(ring gear only) and the carrier are the same for the D30 and D30A and that's about it.

RTV is all you need!Never used anything but RTV for diff covers and never had a problem,there are only 3 things that really need gaskets--head gaskets,intake gaskets,and exhuast gaskets.

well I used that Lube Locker gasket for my rear Diff and its working great. So I thought id try one for the front Diff when I do it...

well I used that Lube Locker one for my rear and its working great. So I thought id try one for the front when I do it...
No need to take the front diff cover off,just use the drain plug on the bottom of the front diff.
