Maybe I am one of the few, but it bugs me. On my 2002 KJ that I bought used from a friend of mine, it drives me nuts when I park the Jeep, get out and try to open the cargo gate or back door, and it is locked. I know that anyone wanting to get out of the Jeep can open their door handle from the inside and it will open, but opening from the outside, you can't. I can't seem to get into the habit of pressing the unlock button when parking, before I attempt to open the back door or the gate. I guess I am too used to my old Silverado, that when you shifted into park, all doors unlocked.

Is there a way to program the locks that they unlock upon shifting into Park? It seems to me that the technology was not available or applied in 2002? If there is a way to reprogram via the key fob, can anyone help me?

Thanks!!

HOW TO: Tweak your Keyless Entry settings

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's some tips on how you can tweak your Jeep's keyless entry system to fit your indiviaul needs. Many of these options are available to program with an EVIC, but if your Libby is not equipped with one, you can still make some changes to suit your needs. The features below are available to anyone who has a keyless entry system, regardless of whether it is equipped with Sentry key/Alarm.

AUTOMATIC (ROLLING) LOCKS
This is the "Lock when the vehicle is going 15mph" feature. This feature can also be disabled through the EVIC.
The rolling locks feature can be toggled ON/OFF by using the DRB IIIt only.

HORN CHIRP DISABLING / ENABLING
This controls if you want your Libby to beep the horn when locking via the keyless entry. * Reports indicate that this does not work for 05 mdoels.
To DISABLE (cancel) the horn chirp feature,
Press and hold the transmitter LOCK button for four to ten seconds.
While pressing the LOCK button in, press the UNLOCK button.
Release both buttons.

To ENABLE the horn chirp feature, repeat the above procedure.

OPTICAL CHIRP (FLASH) DISABLING / ENABLING
This controls if you want your Libby to flash the hazard lights when locking/unlocking via the keyless entry.
To DISABLE (cancel) the optical chirp feature,
Press and hold the transmitter LOCK button for four to ten seconds.
While pressing the LOCK button in, press the TAILGATE RELEASE button.
Release both buttons.

To ENABLE the optical chirp feature, repeat the above procedure.

TAIL GATE RELEASE DELAY
The liberty can be set to pop the tailgate instantly when you press the button, or require it to be pressed and held for it to open
Press the UNLOCK button for four to ten seconds.
While pressing the UNLOCK button, press the TAIL GATE RELEASE button.
Release both buttons.

This will toggle between PRESS AND HOLD and PRESS (no delay).

UNLOCK SEQUENCE
When unlocking the liberty, you can choose between unlocking drivers door first or unlocking all doors simultaneously.
Press and hold the transmitter UNLOCK button for four to ten seconds.
While pressing the UNLOCK button in, press the LOCK button.
Release both buttons.

This will toggle between Driver door first and Unlock all doors function.

Thanks for the tips RUSH345!

I agree, and when you try and sneek in at 3 am, it really sucks when you forget to lock it from the door and hit that button.... then your BUSTED!

I disabled the chirp on my 05 a long while back using the same instructions as above. So not sure if it's just some 05 models or what. I guess this is just like that some 05 and newer models cannot do the the "key trick" to check ODB codes?

I lock the doors with the button on the inside of the door before I get out when I do that 8) Reminds me of a Megadeth song though

I'm pretty sure there's nothing you can do about this. You can't change it from the EVIC on a 2002 and if there's a trick using the key fob, I've never heard of it. Maybe there's some magic a dealer can perform. I have an 02 like you and this can be incredibly maddening. You just have to remember to unlock them all when you get out. Or never drive faster than 14 mph.

From a safety standpoint, I don't think you'd necessarily always want the doors to unlock when you put it in park. But IMO they ought to be set up so that all doors unlock when the driver door is opened.

My dealer installed an alarm that is connected to the keyless entry. I tried to disable the chirp through my EVIC but it still chirped. Ends up I had to have them disable the chirp from the alarm also. :x Total PITA!

Thanks Jeepskate. I guess I am not the only one who finds this maddening, and it would be pretty tough to stay under 14mph.

I have not heard of the EVIC before. What is this......something or the computer that controls all of the goodies through the use of buttons on the dash?? Could I assume that it stands for Electronic Vehicle Information Center??

Yes, that is what it stands for. It is mounted overhead between the visors.

Mines a 2004 crd and it wont let me do the ignition sequence for the fault codes or let me alter the chirp . Mine isnt chirping anyway but i thought i'd use the above info to try it but to no avail.Mines got evic ,and that lets you alter door locking ,head light delay, and light flashing when locking -unlocking but no settings for audible chirp. Ah well it would probably annoy me anyway.
