LOST JEEPS :: View topic - What is the Distance between factory roof rails?

I have an 05 KJ Renegade, and the yakima basketcase. I know the rails are JUST about far enough apart for the basket to fit inside the long way. (barely too close together to fit, however)

The web says that the dimensions are 26.5 x 38.75 x 2, so I'd say that from inside to inside the roof rails are probably around 38.5 or so, so maybe 40-45" on centers.

How are you planning on mounting it to the roof without crossrails? I'm fairly certain that the basket is skinnier than the rails, or too close to try to mount directly.

Anyone have this (in inches) off the top of their head or can sneak out to the parking lot with a tape measure (wishfull thinking ) I have a KJ on order and am looking at getting the Yakima megawarrior basket and would like to mount directly to the factory bars. The yakima site shows requirment of towers and crossbars to mount it which would make it a few more inches higher and harder to fit in most car parks.

Thanks for the dimensions. As for how I am going to get it on, I have no idea. Once I get it and place it up on top I'll come up with something.

Just one thing to consider, Instead of using factory crossbars which are 1" or more square, I used flat stock from Home depot which kept my height one inch lower. It's not much but may help in garages. I know now I just touch the mall warning bar but clear inside.

I am debating on whether to get a basket myself.

I am debating on whether to get a basket myself. I'm actually using thule 50" bars on Thule Crossroad 450s I have a lot of other photos on the link in my sig. The Crossroad works great with the tubular rails, it's has rubber-coated metal strapping to loop around the rail and a screw tightening system. Looks almost like it was designed for it, I think it's probably sturdier than factory crossbars - I have no problem standing on them to hang a tarp while camping. Click here for larger photo

Natasha - I used the Yakima low rider mounts on my 2003 Renny and they worked great on the factory side rails. I have a setup very much like Se7enLC with a basket which sits low between the rails. It's the same basket as he has. You can use the Yakima (round) cross bars (48") and the basket will mount to the cross rails with the brackets that it comes with. Very clean and low profile.
