What does ABS feel like and sound like when it activates? I took my jeep out in the snow and wanted to see how easily it slides on the snow. I was going under 10mph and jammed the brakes on and it sounds like a metal shovel being drug across rough cement, and you can also feel it very strongly thru the brake pedal. Just sounds and feels absolutely terrible and destructive. I even got out to see if my skid plate came loose and was dragging on the ground. I called to make an appointment and the service advisor told me that's how it's supposed to feel and nothing is wrong. So anyway just wanted to verify that. Never had ABS before. If it's normal it kind of takes the fun out of sliding in the snow. By the way the Liberty is horrible in the snow in 2WD. 4WD and you're good to go.....at least in the mild snow I was in. |

Yup that is what they do it is like a skid-grab-skid-grab-skid-grab but fast and if you are driving or moving faster then it pulses faster |

That sensation is also what sometimes causes people to get in accidents w/ ABS. They hit the brakes, it does all those things you described and they freak out and let up off the pedal causing them to crash into whatever they were trying to avoid. I remember showing my wife how it worked in a GMC van we once owned so she would be familiar. Needless to say, she didn't like it and it freaked her out. I explained that it was normal and had her do it again and all was fine. |

Thanks for verifying it's normal. Another lousy invention if you ask me. Just something else to break. I just found this info on how usesless ABS is: The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conducted several studies trying to determine if cars equipped with ABS are involved in more or fewer fatal accidents. It turns out that in a 1996 study, vehicles equipped with ABS were overall no less likely to be involved in fatal accidents than vehicles without. The study actually stated that although cars with ABS were less likely to be involved in accidents fatal to the occupants of other cars, they are more likely to be involved in accidents fatal to the occupants of the ABS car, especially single-vehicle accidents.[quote] |

I dont understand how having ABS can make a wreck more fatal for you than if you didnt have ABS. I know for a fact that ESP and Anti-roll mitigation make a jeep safer. Ive used the ESP once or twice in the WK.. Not that it was needed at the time, but I can see how it would be useful for someone that didnt know what to do. |

The article continued with this: There is much speculation about the reason for this. Some people think that drivers of ABS-equipped cars use the ABS incorrectly, either by pumping the brakes or by releasing the brakes when they feel the system pulsing. Some people think that since ABS allows you to steer during a panic stop, more people run off the road and crash. Some more recent information may indicate that the accident rate for ABS cars is improving, but there is still no evidence to show that ABS improves overall safety. |
