Post subject: | QUICK QUESTION...NEWBIE |
Near the rear axle at the end of the drive shaft there is a large thing that looks like maybe a couple rubber vibration absorbers or something....if looking from the rear it is located on the left (drivers) side. Can someone tell me what this is? Maybe it is mounted to the axle...I haven't really gotten under the vehicle to check it out. I just noticed it when installing a tow hitch. Thanks for any info... Yes, that is what I'm talking about. What is that? ALSO...what axle do you have in the rear? It looks the same as mine. I see people on here talking about a limited slip axle and so forth...but I can't tell which one I have. Clark |

Clark You can request your build sheet from Jeep. Visit: THIS LINK Have you VIN number handy, and tell them you would like a copy of your Build Sheet. I think renegade models came with limited slip, I am not sure. I don't wheel much. Yes, I think those are anti-shock or vibration absorbers. |

Clark You might also still have a green tag wrapped around the passenger side axle tube out by the brakes that tells you if it is "Open" or "Trac-Lock". Check both sides to be sure as I did once see the tag on the driver side on a KJ. |

IF that green sticker isn't there is there any other way to tell? Do both axles look the same from the outside? Or are there differences in their appearance as well as the green sticker? Clark |

They're all the same on the outside (Chrysler 8.25" differential). If there's no sticker, you gotta get a build sheet. Took me about 2 minutes at the local dealer to get one. If they want to know why you want it, just tell 'em you're getting ready to change the fluids in the diff's and want to make sure you use the right fluid so you need to know if you have limited slip or not. |

If there is no sticker, jack both back wheels up and try to spin one of them. If the other wheel spins in the other direction, its open. If you cannot spin the wheel at all, its a LS. |

Also curious (but having simply never asked before), is that a side-effect or necessity because of type of joints used in the driveline or simply a creature comfort that would result in a slightly rougher ride if removed? |

you can still spin a factory limited slip with high miles on it, it's not really that hard. |

Yes, the telltail is if the other wheel spins the same direction or the opposite direction... same - LSD different - open at least with the clutch type traklok, don't think it will work with the TT by design.. |
