okay... here are my thoughts. my current roof rack setup...
and
as many other have. my black widow roof basket does not hold much weight... i can not stand or sit in it without bending it, and i have an idea... FIRST - LineX the entire roof, excluding under the lightbar b/c that would be a pain... SECOND - Purchase Rock Lizards Gecko HD Roof Rails and attach... THIRD - Build a contraption to hold stuff in... like a clamp around the ever strong gecko rails, and a piece welded to it so i could squish things together... that is what i am thinking...i know it will not be as cheap as my current setup, but i do not like my current setup. |

Rocks Gecko setup looks pretty sweet. It would be hard NOT to get that if I was in the market. |

Hey Rip, Can you 'lace' some 1/8" x 2" flatbar or something up there for added strength? |

this was th start of my roof rack, but I think it would work great to mount baskets on also and total it cost me about $10, and I have a welder I could weld some up, and obvisouly they wouldnt need to be that long mine were just b/c I made a full length roof rack, and it would also give you a low profile

so you could weld me some up... i still need to check the pricing on the LineX for the roof, but i don't think it would be that bad... if you were me... how would you have them LineX the roof... upto the renny lightbar, or all the way through from the front of the KJ to the back? b/c there is that spot about 1" (I'd go outside and measure it but i'm still kinda sick and it's nice and warm in my bed and cold outside) or so right between the top of the windshield and the renny lightbar... |

Good idea. Now we just need that rear bumper with a ladder to the roof rack. I'll definately be in the market for a roof rack after the new year. |

If you can't go Gecko... One other thing you could do is fit a piece of 3/4" plywood for the floor of the basket. fit it in there, drill holes for u bolts then prime and paint it (maybe even herculine it after you prime it for a non skid surface) to preserve it. The board will act as a "Snow Shoe" effect and distribute your weight accross the entire basket and not sagging in the middle. I would use a good B/C grade plywood, sand it finish it and it would last a long while. Maybe even MDF (Medium Density Fiber). stronger and heavier, but cheaper than plywood and hold paint real well. drill it, counter sink the bolts and stand up there with no worries. In looking again at your current set up, can you get longer u bolts that hold the basket now and just use those bolts and their locations to hold the board and basket all at once. |

Could you move your cross bars closer together and attach the rack that way? This (in theory) would bring your supports closer and help to even out the load rating in the middle section. Just a thought. |

if I were bedlining my Jeep Id want to go all the way, yes it would be a pain in the butt but it would be worth it in the end, Im waiting till summer and a little bit more money and Im thinking I will bedline the whole exterior like Wally, I found some Hunter Green that I think would look awesome, but I need to find out if it was UV protectant, plus it would cover some of the rust I put on my Jeep |

I Herculined the entire lower half of my jeep with Herculiner. Came out really nice but started to fade after a couple of months. I have found that just some normal aerosol tire wet stuff keeps it looking nice and black for a long time and costs almost nothing per application. |
